Hello!
Nice to see you again. Over the last few days I've been looking
at Biz Bits to see how I can add greater value for you. As a
result I hope to start a new section either next week, or the
week following. "TIPS BITS" as it's be called, will provide a
short tip or piece of information each week to make your life
online easier, or more productive.
Since most of Biz Bits is quite structured, I thought it would be
nice for this new section to be fairly freeform. Topics covered
might be anything from marketing strategies to common writing
errors, HTML tips to web site promotion.
To add an extra dimension, I've also decided to open the section
for you and other readers to make your own contributions as well.
I know many readers are particularly knowledgeable in certain
fields, or have valuable experiences they have learnt from that
could help other subscribers. Exchanging information of this kind
is good for all, plus you get free promotion for your effort.
If you have a useful tip that you feel other readers will benefit
from, send it in and I'll include it, along with your 3 line
signature file.
Start sending your tips, etc. to mailto:TipsBits+nowsell.com

Breaking News ... I was just about to send this out when I heard
that police in Canada have arrested a 15 year old boy in
connection with the denial of service attacks that froze major
web properties last month.
The boy has so far only been charged in relation to the attack on
the CNN web site. However, he is apparently the prime suspect for
the attacks on the other sites as well.
What do you think about that? Makes me feel DUMB!
I wonder what the 'professional' expert criminal hackers are
getting into that we don't even now about? More than CNN I bet!

Guess what ... Amazon are being sued for patent infringement
hahaha! Well, it made me laugh anyway! ;-)
Having sued Barnes and Noble last year for infringing on its
one-click ordering patent, and announcing its patent on affiliate
programs last month, it appears that Jeff Bezos and Amazon are
now getting a taste of their own medicine.
San Francisco-based InTouch Group filed a federal patent
infringement against Amazon who it accuses of ripping off it's
patent for delivering online music samples.
Joshua Kaplan, chairman and CEO of InTouch, said he was
unsuccessful in his attempts to strike a deal with Amazon in the
years before InTouch's music sample patent was granted. According
to Kaplan, he then sent polite personal letters last December to
about 30 Internet businesses that were allegedly infringing.
Those he was unable to work out license arrangements with he
sued.
Apparently, the detailed nature of the patents makes a ruling in
InTouch's favor quite likely. Says Kaplan "If we prevail with a
preliminary injunction, Amazon and the others will have to look
at a settlement and royalty payments to us, or they will be left
with no music samples on their sites. Barnes and Noble could go
to two-click, but we don't think there's any easy workaround for
them on this."

Nearly 120 million of the estimated 300 million worldwide
Internet users have already made a purchase or transaction
online, with as many as one in four purchases made on impulse,
according to an Angus Reid Group study of 28,37 Internet users in
34 countries. The study found that the vast majority of shoppers
were very satisfied with their online experience and only a
minority voiced concerns about fraud and security issues.
However, According to the study, barely half of shoppers outside
the US and Canada use credit cards, compared with 75 percent in
North America. Cash on delivery and bank drafts are almost as
popular as instant credit card payments in Asia and Europe.
Forty percent of all Internet users, about 120 million people
worldwide, have made at least one purchase online, the study
found. More than half (54 percent) of all online transactions
were made in the US. The typical American online shopper made
seven purchases over the past three months for a total of $828,
compared to the global average of less than $500.
Three-quarters of Internet users around the world expect to spend
more online this year than last. The majority of online shoppers
planned their purchases and knew exactly where to find what they
were looking for, but 24 percent said they found a product by
chance in the course of a routine Internet session.
The goods most frequently purchased online included books (37
percent), computer equipment and software (21 percent), music or
music CDs (20 percent), and clothing (17 percent).
71 percent of global Internet users described themselves as "very
satisfied" with their last online transaction and another 22
percent were "somewhat satisfied." The majority (60 percent) of
global online purchasers cited convenience as their motivation
for using the Internet over traditional shopping methods.

If the recent happenings on the Nasdaq don't worry you (and they
shouldn't; we all knew the bubble would burst sometime), here's
something that might. According to Forrester Research, the
combination of weak financials, increasing competitive pressures,
and investor flight will drive most of today's dot-com retailers
out of business by 2001.
The Forrester report "The Demise of Dot Com Retailers" found that
in order to survive in the online retail battleground, firms will
need to redirect extravagant branding investments into three
categories of hard assets, defined by scale, service, and speed.
Forrester aren't alone in their predictions. Michael Fleisher,
president and CEO of the GartnerGroup, predicted at the group's
Spring Symposium/ITxpo that 95 to 98 percent of all dot com
companies will fail over the next 24 months. He also predicts a
resurgence to focus on "old economy concepts" like market share,
brand equity, distribution channels, financial control, and
operational integrity.
