Hello,

Welcome to a new, leaner, meaner Biz Bits. Yes ... thin is in!

After committing myself to withdrawing the Voting Booth section
last week, considering the space it had occupied led me to
re-think Biz Bits being in two parts: Part 2 would be
ridiculously short with just the Feature Article! I decided it
would make sense to revert back to the single-part format Biz
Bits had at the start of the year, but with more focused content,
endeavoring to keep within the AOL 25K limit.

Though dwindling participation in the Voting Booth was the
genuine reason for withdrawing it, I've been tossing around the
idea of a more condensed Biz Bits for a while. These days, many
people (myself included) suffer from email overload, and are
looking for a shorter, sharper read. Latterly, I've even wondered
if the problem of too much email was perhaps a factor in the
Voting Booth's decline.

In streamlining Biz Bits, I've also decided to cut 'Tips Bits.'
Though a relatively recent introduction, it simply didn't take
off. The only regular contributors were myself and Jan Tincher (
http://www.TameYourBrain.com/ ); hardly the cross-section of
subscribers I had hoped for.

If by now you are wondering what will be left to distinguish Biz
Bits from so many other ezines, fear not. My aim is to improve
the quality of content, whilst trimming the fat. I will still be
writing as much content myself as I have always done.

I said last week I would miss the reader interaction afforded by
the Voting Booth, and would try and think of something to replace
that element. Well, I've come up with a couple of ideas, the
first of which I'm launching today.

VIEWPOINT, as the new section is called, is a bit like the old
Voting Booth; but without the vote part. Each week I'll ask you
your opinion on a business-related issue. Just send me a brief
note telling me what you think (like the Voting Booth comments,
which continued even when overall votes fell off), and I'll share
it with everyone here. Since it's an opinion rather than a 'yes'
or 'no' answer, questions can be wider in scope allowing for a
greater variety of replies.

I'm introducing VIEWPOINT on a trail basis initially. If you are
one of those that enjoyed the Voting Booth (special thanks if you
wrote to tell me so), you'll like this. Even more I suspect.
Please get involved if you wish to see it continue.

When the page you are trying to access seems to be taking forever to reach, don't waste time waiting for it. Click on the stop button and try again. Sometimes the request from your browser gets 'lost' on the way. Unless there's a problem with the server hosting the page you want, you'll usually get it straight away on your second attempt. 2. If you have a rough idea of the name of a site you are looking for, try typing it directly into the address line on your browser. There's a good chance you'll find what you want within two or three attempts. This is often quicker than visiting and then sifting through the results at a search engine. 3. If you are going to be on a site for a while, collapse the browser's toolbars. They substantially reduce the viewable area of the screen and you are unlikely to need them until you leave the site. Collapsing the toolbars will enable you to view an extra inch or so of the page in your browser window, reducing the need for scrolling. 4. Surf with several browser windows open at once, so you don't have to wait for pages to load. If you have a small monitor and you find you don't have enough room on the screen, use 2 windows that overlap completely except for a small sliver across the bottom and down one side, leaving enough to click on to make either window active. Alternatively you can minimize a window to the bottom of the screen. It will continue to load, even though you're not looking at it. If you run a Mac, just double click on the top frame of the window for it to shoot up like a roller blind, leaving only the title bar visible. Double click on it to open again. You can either view pages from different sites in different windows, or different pages from the same site, or a combination of the two. 5. Try to avoid bookmarking web sites unless you really will want to visit them more than once. Bookmarks quickly get messy when you add every 'possibly interesting' site you come across. If you don't have time to investigate a site immediately, either copy and paste the address into a text file reserved for the purpose, or put a shortcut/alias to the URL into a special folder of 'Sites to Visit' on your PC. Use folders and sub-folders to organize bookmarks into topics, so that you can navigate through them as you would folders on your PC. For example, one folder could be called 'Ezines' inside of which are separate folders for things like 'Free Content', 'List Databases', 'Publishing Guides', etc. Spend a few minutes every week filing your bookmarks into their correct folders (even better is to spend a moment and do it immediately). An untidy desk is known to be one of the biggest causes of wasted time in the office. Your browser is just the same. If you don't keep your bookmarks tidy, you'll waste hours every week searching through them for what you want. 6. If you have Internet Explorer make full use of the auto complete function. Store information you'll often want to paste into forms (such as URLs, web site titles, alternative email addresses, etc.) in Explorer's memory. Only having to type one or two letters, instead of the whole thing, is a great time saver. For example, whenever the first key I type in a form field is a lowercase 'h', Explorer will fill-in the field to read 'http://www.NowSell.com' When I subscribe to ezines, I usually use an address in the form of 'ezinename@nowsell.com'. If I type an '@' in a subscription box, auto complete gives me '@nowsell.com' leaving me with just the ezine name to add to the front. If you're willing to be a bit more creative, you can also use all of the number keys. Simply prefix the information you want to store with a number like this: 3bob@yahoo.com. When you type in the number 3, the text '3bob@yahoo.com' will be pasted into the form field. Since the text is always highlighted when inserted, it's very quick to remove the unwanted number 3 at the beginning. A single press of the left arrow key on your keyboard followed by a single forward delete will leave you with just the text you want. 7. Many sites have pages bursting with information (especially Homepages), and you can sometimes spend several minutes scanning the page before finding what you're looking for. In such a scenario, take advantage of your browser's 'Find' function to save you time. For example, have you ever visited a search engine for the first time and gone over the page again and again trying to find the 'Add URL' link? Next time, call up 'Find' on your browser, and type in 'add' (better than typing 'add url' as you will locate the link even if it's called 'Add Site' or 'Add Link'). If the first bit of text the browser highlights isn't the 'add' you want, select 'Find Again' to show the next occurrence. This method is also very handy for checking your page rank at search engines. Just search for your root URL instead of scanning the listings. 8. Get into the habit of using keyboard shortcuts. It's much quicker to use keys than move your mouse all the way up to the top of the screen and click on a menu or button (when proficient, it's quicker than right-clicking too). You might not think it, but keyboard shortcuts really will save you a lot of time, especially with those functions you use often. Below are the most important I suggest you learn. The key combinations given are based on IE 5 for Mac. Most also should work for Windows users after substituting the Control (or sometimes Alt) key in place of Command. Check your browser's help files for a complete list and variations. Pick one or two to learn first, once you've remembered those, learn a couple more. Home - move to the top of the page. End - move to the bottom of the page. Page Up - scroll up the page, one frame at a time. Page Down - scroll down the page, one frame at a time. Up Arrow - scroll up the page in small increments. Down Arrow - scroll down the page in small increments. Command + Left Arrow - same as 'Previous' or 'Back' button Command + Right Arrow - same as 'Next' or 'Forward' button Command + A - select all page text, or a field the cursor is in. Command + C - copy to clipboard. Command + V - paste from clipboard. Command + F - search for text on a page. Command + G - repeat search for text on a page. Command + D - add page to favorites. Command + E - view page source. Command + N - open a new browser window. Command + S - save the page. Command + Tab - move to the next input field in a form. Command + Period or Esc key alone - stops loading the page. Return/Enter - Go to address selected in the address box, or submit form. 9. Bookmark searches that you make often. Whenever you visit your bookmark you will see the results of the current search, without needing to type in your search phrase. This is a great time saver on more complex searches and for checking your site's ranking in the search engines. For ease in identifying the bookmarks, select edit bookmarks (or edit favorites) on your browser, to rename them with the search engine and keyword, e.g. "AV - home based business" (AV = Alta Vista). 10. If you are going to be spending some time doing repetitive tasks where graphics aren't important (like using search engines), switch them off. When it first downloads an image, your browser does store it in it's own cache on your hard disk, for instant retrieval on subsequent requests. These days however, many banners are design to auto-refresh and prevent caching. This means it will request your browser to reload it from source each time the page is displayed, thus slowing you down. Simply click on your browser preferences, go to 'Web Content' or similar, and de-select pictures. Switch them on again when you've finished. © 1999-2000 Azam Corry "Do it Better, Do it Faster, Do it Right!"
