X INTRODUCTION X

Hello,
In this week's feature article, "Tis the Season," Bob Osgoodby
talks about the importance of not slacking off on your marketing
efforts over the next few weeks. I fully agree with Bob, who has
picked up on a number of points I've been thinking about myself.
Recently, I've been focusing on a project I'd originally planned
to have online by now. My sudden, unexpected change of host and
accompanying site redesign, plus a number of other delays, forced
me to re-think my priorities. Instead of devoting all my
energies to completing the project before year-end, and missing
out on everything else, I decided to slip it into second place
for a week or two.
I've been turning my attentions to what I can do *quickly*, to
capitalize on both the last few weeks of the seasonal rush AND
immediately after the holiday period.
As I see it, post-holidays, there are two certain scenarios which
give rise to potentially lucrative opportunities:
1. There will be lots of new PC owners coming online.
2. Many people will have received cash gifts.
I promote the products of a number of affiliate programs, and in
various ways. I earn more with some than I do with others.
However, over the last week as I was preparing my planned
promotions, one program stood out as being particularly ideal for
both pre and post holiday sales: The Newbie Club.
Now, you may know of other programs that you feel are equally
ideal, and if so, I urge you to pull out the stops and get
promoting them. But if aren't an affiliate of such a program - or
even if you are - I suggest you read on. I've no intention of
hard selling this. Treat it as a tip.
The Newbie Club specializes in providing easy-to-understand
guides for those new to Windows and the Internet. Its flagship
product, Windows For Newbies is *perfect* for all those new PC
owners (sales after the holidays), AND as a gift item for someone
getting a new PC (sales before the holidays).
In my opinion, the affiliate program is one of - if not *the* -
best online (and I've seen a lot, believe me!). Quality products,
generous commissions, great tracking, and superb marketing
materials prepared by Joe Robson, co-founder of The Newbie Club
with PC whizz Tom Glander.
A marketing veteran with over 30 years in the business, Joe is
also the author of the "Make Your Words Sell!" copywriting
course, published by Ken Evoy. See it here:

And HE is writing YOUR marketing copy!
Of course, you can write your own stuff too. My point here
however, is that Joe has provided (and continues to add to) such
a wide range of quality sales copy and lead-in articles, that you
can be selling with confidence within 10 minutes.
Whether you're an ISP, or a small homepage site, Windows For
Newbies is a product that will probably appeal to a percentage of
your visitors and/or ezine subscribers.

When I prepare Biz Bits, I seldom read it as a subscriber would.
I always read through each issue, but I'm basically just checking
for mistakes, etc. A week or so ago however, I happened to be
going through some recent issues, looking for something.
As I did so, it suddenly occurred to me that Biz Bits seems to
have a lot of ads these days! The problem stems from my cutting
some content recently, and overlooking to make a corresponding
reduction in advertising space.
I don't like ad-heavy ezines, and I'm sure you don't either.
Although this is the time of year that ads pay best, it was clear
something had to be done. After sleeping on it, I decided on a
course of action:
As of today, the MARKETPLACE classified ads section is no more.
I think you'll approve of the change. I hadn't received any
complaints about the number of ads, but when I put my subscriber
'hat' on, I certainly prefer it this way. :-)
This issue is also a bit different in that I've included a bonus
article (just for today), in addition to the usual feature
article. Why?
Hmmm ... 'cos I've got the space, I like it, and I think you will
too! In providing an insight into her life and thoughts on
success, author Pamela Heywood reinforces two universal truths:
You will not strike it rich overnight on the Internet, and to
succeed requires determined perseverance.

"Tis the Season"
----------------
by Bob Osgoodby
With the coming of the holidays, many home based entrepreneurs
are getting caught up in the spirit of the season. Instead of
approaching their business with the same vigor and vitality as
usual, they have dropped their guard a bit and think they can
coast through the end of the year. They might figure they've got
to buy presents for family and friends, and funds will be a
little short. After all they reason, everyone is doing this and
December will be slow anyway.
Nothing could be further from the truth. Now is the time to
double, and maybe even redouble your efforts! The people who feel
they can renew their advertising efforts in January will miss
this boat.
Your plan at this point should be to aggressively advertise your
business. Think about it. Many people will be short of funds, or
overextended due to the holiday gifting, and won't be standing in
line during the next few weeks to take advantage of your
opportunity. But, we all know it takes between 5 and 7 exposures
to get someone's attention. While the ads may not pay big
dividends in December, you will be reinforcing your branding with
your potential clients.
Take a lesson from the "brick and mortar" establishments. They
will be pounding us with their ads now more than ever, trying to
get their share of our holiday shopping dollars. And they will
continue this until well in January realizing that some people
have more expendable income after the holidays than before.
But, how about all those people getting first time computers?
Don't forget that the Internet doesn't take a holiday. There are
thousands of prospects going online everyday. If you relax now,
you may be missing those prospects that you might otherwise get.
If you are in an affiliate program or in multi-level marketing,
now is the ideal time to make yourself known. Many of these
programs allow participation with little or no up front
expenditure. If yours is one, feature this in your ads.
The design of your ads is critical at this time of the year. The
question you should pose is not "can you afford it now, but can
you afford not to".
The concept of advertising is sometimes difficult for people to
understand, especially by those involved for the first time. The
most important time to advertise is when business is slow. The
pre-holiday season will be slow if you market an online
opportunity. Now, many people will not realize this and curtail
their activities. The smart ones will and increase their ad
expenditures. They will get the "lion's share" of the business
available.
Some people will receive money as a holiday gift, and now is the
time to get their attention. The winner of this race will be the
first person they think of when the funds become available.
PC's currently exist in 60% of all US homes, and the number of
first time users increases everyday. Because of the downturn in
the stock market and slowing economic growth, PC makers will most
likely try to boost sales by cutting prices, leading to a major
price war. While this is bad for the PC makers, it is good for
those in business on the net as the number of new people coming
on, who are your prospects, always increases when this happens.
New two-way satellite services are also emerging as a viable
broadband alternative to cable modem and DSL service. The
satellite is likely to appeal to consumers who want high-speed
Internet access, but who either face long waits trying to obtain
cable modem or DSL access, or live in a rural area where it is
not available. This will also increase the number of people
coming online.
If you are in business on the web, or planning to do so, now just
might be the time to take advantage of the lethargy that others
will face. While it "Tis the Season To Be Jolly", it is not the
time to slow down or discontinue your marketing efforts.

"SUCCESS!"
----------
by Pamela Heywood
How do you measure it? Do you just count $$$$ or pounds or
whatever your currency is? Obviously that's one goal and, to make
enough money to be at least self-sufficient is something we all
desire. But there are many other measures: all part of the long-
term view, which will create a business that will sustain you and
your family not only today, but also for many tomorrows.
I'll admit that I'm still not earning quite enough of whatever
currency, but I certainly do think it an achievement to have paid
my own hefty phone bills and have enough left over for the rent
for the last three months now. Yep, this is the first time in two
years of online work. I'd hate to work out the hourly rate!
I don't want to put anyone off who is new to online business: I
do want to impress upon you that results will be neither magic
nor instant, but results are possible.
So many people want it to happen overnight. It's partly society
and it's partly that they just want to believe -- and when it
does not happen, a vast majority will have given up long before I
began to see results. You have to have tenacity: be like a dog
with a bone. Hang on and keep trying, no matter the odds.
I live in the remotest valley on the north of the island of
Tenerife, just off the African coast. Besides me and my
"technological toy room" that must appear as something from outer
space to the locals -- we had 900 goats and 49 cows on the last
count. It's like stepping back into the 19th Century! Which all
goes to prove that "working the net" really can be done from
absolutely anywhere, by anyone.
The cost of living here is cheap and the scenery inspirational:
that's "richness" to me in itself. For that, I'll put up with the
intermittent nature of Internet connections and electrical
supplies that make it harder for me that most of you in
"civilised locations". But that's what we do this for isn't it?
To escape the 9-5 and all the other drudgery and slavery that
goes with it. It's a great feeling, but it doesn't come on a
plate, unfortunately.
You are impatient, you may even be hungry, but you cannot
shortcut the need to spend time learning the culture, building
your business and your business relationships. The more so if
your line wasn't business before the net. Mine was, with 20+
years as an accountant that has been of enormous help. The
environment and tools may be different, but business is still the
same thing it ever was. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. You
still have to be business-like and strive at it to succeed.
I still have a long way to go, but I am happy to be getting
there. On the other hand, you can now take it from me (self-
appointed expert!) that it certainly is possible -- my dad said
it wasn't! You too might have close family and friends who
discourage you. It would be easy to listen to them, to give up.
Don't! Do they know the net? Tell them (respectfully) to go ...
Having got this far, you can be sure that I will not be sitting
back and resting on my laurels. I have some great friends and
associates on the net, some glowing testimonials, have plans for
new products and better things for my business, more joint
ventures ... I've only done that through learning, networking,
making contacts, giving something of value and thinking, not just
of money today, but of the long-term rewards and benefits.
"It is by spending oneself that one becomes rich." Sarah
Bernhardt, 19th century actress
