+ INTRODUCTION +
=====================

Hello again,

You may have heard that since Monday, several major Web sites
have been hit by denial-of-service attacks. This kind of attack
doesn't involve breaking into a Web site (sensitive information
is safe), but simply overloading the site's server with requests
for data. Yahoo was the first to be hit, becoming unavailable for
three hours on Monday. Next were Amazon.com, eBay, CNN and
Buy.com, followed by E-Trade, Datek and ZDNet earlier this
morning.

Apparently the attacks are well coordinated and coming from
multiple locations on the Internet, possibly indicating a group
effort. Considering that the servers of the effected companies
handle a huge amount of traffic, yet are normally operating at
less than half of their capacity, it must have taken an awful lot
of requests in order to overload them. eBay said they were
receiving data at more than 8 times their total capacity!

Attacks of this nature are nothing new - the technique is
relatively simple and the software to do it is freely available
online. What's new here is the intensity and coordination. It's
unlikely that this is the work of a few kids sitting at their
PCs!

The FBI are involved, but have admitted it's going to be tough
going. Since the attacks are malicious in nature and obviously
planned, those involved have probably taken care to cover their
tracks. The information showing the origin of the packets (data
is transmitted over the Internet in blocks known as packets) sent
to the sites is almost certainly forged (known as 'spoofing').
Plus with so many hosts simultaneously sending the data, these
must have been remotely hacked in any case (probably planting a
hidden 'sleeping' application, that wakes up to do it's dirty
work when triggered).

It will be interesting to see what the FBI turns up, just to know
how well data transfer on the Internet can be traced, if nothing
else. The worst aspect of all this though is the possible loss of
some consumer confidence in online security, the effects of which
would be felt by all businesses online. I'm sure the average
internet user conjures up a pretty negative image in their mind
on hearing the words 'site' and 'hacked' together in the same
sentence. Even more so when the sites concerned are so many of
those considered the safest!

Personally however, I find it surprising that something so simple
can cause so much trouble. I mean, in any mechanical system you'd
have a safety valve to let off pressure, wouldn't you? I can't
help but wonder why there isn't a similar system online. One that
just diverts traffic away once it reaches a certain threshold. Or
something like a commercial spam filter that looks for a large
number of messages originating from the same source? Hmm ...
perhaps I'd better shut up. After all, what do I know?

                               <*>

Mike Enlow, self made millionaire and marketing expert (a real
one!), has just released a 'must-have' free ebook. Called "Online
Stealth Marketing", it's a full 14 chapters of *very powerful*
joint venture and "marketing on the internet" information. Valued
at $49, he's currently offering it completely free of charge. No
strings attached. You can find the book at:
http://www.enlowcircle.com I'd get it now if I were you!

                               <*>

The manual search engine submit service I announced last week has
been receiving a very positive response. If you missed the last
issue, this new service allows you to manually submit to the 25
most important search engines in under 15 minutes!

You should always submit your most important URLs by hand, as the
SE's often reject automated submissions. Previously - even using
bookmarks - it would take you an hour or so to submit just one
URL. When you add to this the fact that you need to maintain a
regular program of submissions to get all your pages listed, you
could be loosing almost a day every week!

If you haven't tried it yet, head on over to the Now Sell! Rapid
Search Engine Submit today. You won't believe how easy it is!

                               <*>

I got a note from Teresa Williams of Top Biz News the other day,
asking me to let you know that she has put her "Newsletters
Galore" ebook online. This is primarily for the benefit of WebTV
and Mac users, who are unable to read the download version. The
book, a listing of free ezines, can be read online here:

                               <*>

Join the Biz Bits Affiliate program and earn advertising space
here in Biz Bits. You have your own online stats, and all you
need to do is advertise your unique referral URL in your
