YES!

Dear Azam,

Netscape's not bad but I think a lot of people are anti-IE. I
use MSIE because it's pushed by my local Internet service
provider and I don't see any major inconvenience in using it.

Best Regards,
Zandrel Gellinger
Administrator, A Junk Site of Resources
http://www.ajunksiteofresources.com

[Azam: Yes Zandrel, a lot of Mac users - especially veterans -
are most decidedly anti-IE, anti-Microsoft and anti-Bill Gates!
You see, back in the good ole days, when battle lines were
clearly drawn, every Mac user was weaned on tales of Darth Gates
and his Evil Empire.

Before cunning Bill muddied the waters by spending millions on
the development of native, and - the fiend! - sometimes *good*
Mac software, denouncing the Dark One and his evil designs made
perfect sense.

What was he but a plunder of the Mothership? A cheap, yet
dangerous imposter, using third-rate copies of Apple technologies
against it, in his plan for world domination? Can you imagine
Windows without windows? Or without the Mouse? Or copy-paste? Or
drag-and-drop? Or innumerable essential elements?

Flush with his successes, and adding insult to injury, did he not
then attempt to force ported versions of his inferior windows
applications onto those Mac users seeking compatibility with PC
pals? (An act doomed to failure, and probably Microsoft's biggest
embarrassment: picture millions of users throwing out their new
software and downgrading to an earlier version of Word!)

Looking at things in that light, lingering anti-Microsoft
feelings amongst the Mac community are understandable. However,
though a loyal Mac fan myself (ex-Windows user that found - sorry
if this goes down hard - the Mac is *far* superior), I don't
personally hold to the image of the Evil Empire.

Bill Gates simply did the same as thousands of other successful
businessmen (shady business practices optional). He saw a good
idea, copied it (if rather poorly) and marketed it extremely
well. Microsoft has never been guilty of innovation, but it beat
Apple hands down in marketing strategy.]

My reason for using Internet Explorer is that I've never been
able to keep Netscape consistently working well...

I do keep Netscape on my hard drive, though, as there are a few
sites requiring it. While I don't *like* the fact that I have to
switch to it, these are frequently music sites that I need to
access, for my work. So--although I disagree with the webmasters
who "require" a certain browser, I still can't afford to ignore
them!

[Azam: Funny that Paula. I too mainly use Internet Explorer, but
- as a fellow Mac user - I find Netscape to be far more stable.
Nine out of ten crashes on my machine occur in connection with a
Microsoft application, which, being the one I use most, is
usually IE.

It doesn't sound as though you're only referring to the latest
version of Netscape, but in case you are, being happy with IE 5,
I've yet to download that.

I grew to prefer IE 4.5 over Nav 4.5 because of handy time-saving
features like the forms auto-fill and text auto-complete, plus
the ability to arrange bookmarks in nested folders (very
important when you have a lot).

That notwithstanding, I always considered Nav a better, more
accurate browser with far fewer Java related problems than IE. I
test new web pages in Nav before putting them online, because
most versions of IE have their own idiosyncrasies, and are too
forgiving of html mistakes. Your page might look great in the
version of IE you use. View it in something else and you could be
in for a shock!

However, though I still check in Nav, I now concentrate on making
sure my pages look good in IE, since IE 5 for *Mac* is the first
browser on any platform to correctly and fully implement the
HTML 4 and CSS-1 Web standards. Plus IE 5 for Mac allows you to
change the resolution of the window to represent the 96 dpi of a
Windows machine, giving a more accurate picture of how your page
will appear to PC users than was previously possible.

Another new feature of IE 5 I find particularly useful is the
Internet Scrapbook, which takes snapshots of Web pages for future
reference on or off-line. Much more suited to my needs than Page
Holder Favorites.

If you're into auctions, you'll also like the new Auction
Manager, which tracks items, bids, and time remaining on eBay,
Amazon, and Yahoo auctions. You can set the Auction Manager to
check the status of auctions and notify you if you're outbid.

Since Mac is the platform of choice for most musicians and
graphic artists, it is here that you will find its most ardent
supporters. It is however, very short-sighted of the few amongst
this group who choose to make life difficult for IE users,
especially since they form the majority. We might not like the
choices others make, but it's plain foolish to let them effect
our pocket. Perhaps you can't afford to ignore them. Many others
can.]

NO!

Hi Azam,

Are you kidding? I am a graphic artist and a Mac Addict!

It says it all! Nothing that comes from Bill Gates!
Nothing personally against that guy! But I prefer to stick
to the Steve Jobs gang! ;o)

Enough joking... (Is it?) Simply put, let's say that
I do find Netscape Communicator easier to use and more
"Mac Like". And it serves my habits right. Is is stable
and reliable under the Mac OS, and truly, that's what
really counts!

Hope I wont be hurting Bill Gate's friends! ;-)

[Azam: Thought there was sure to be at least one, Johanne! (Just
kidding!). I'm a Mac addict too. On a personal level and in terms
of creativity, I prefer Apple to Microsoft any day of the week.
And, when all's said and done, it is to Apple that we owe the way
we use PC's today. However, when it comes to getting a job done,
I use whatever tools best suit my needs, irrespective of origin.

In regard to the stability of Nav 4.5 I must concur, and doubt
the latest version would be any less stable. Personally though, I
find the time saving features of Explorer a bigger attraction.

Rather than it taking me a little longer to do everything, I
prefer to have my wasted time gathered up into 'chunks' (i.e.
when Explorer causes a freeze/crash). At least that way I can use
the time to get up and make a brew!

Besides crashes, other problems I find with Microsoft software in
general include the various security holes, and the number of
files Microsoft applications blithely dump in various locations.

Has Bill Gates got any friends? ;-) ]

Hi Azam (and readers)

I have Netscape as my default browser. But I use IE5 also. I do a
lot of surfing and have a lot of windows open. I have a slow
connection speed, so I hop back and forth while I'm waitng for
load ins. I find IE5 to be a little slower than Netscape on my
machine.

[Azam: Ah Linda ... a woman after my own heart! That's exactly
what I do, though generally just with the one application,
unless I need *lots* of pages open at once. Unfortunately, as I
noted in a short article I wrote on the subject, it would appear
few surfers do likewise. If they did, page load time wouldn't be
the issue it is.

I presume you are a Windows user (for no reason other than that
they make up the majority), yet although I use a Mac, I also
found Nav 4.5 to be far faster than IE 4.5. IE 5 is however a
vast improvement on earlier versions, and faster than Nav 4.5
(and possibly the latest version too).]

ISP uses Netscape for everything.

mailto:elpengel@epix.net

[Azam: Am I missing something here, Elizabeth? You're the second
person to mention your ISP in connection with the choice of
browser you use. Here in Malaysia, I use two ISP's. Neither have
an effect on my software choices. In fact, apart from making
payments, I have no direct contact with them whatsoever. I just
log-on to the server and do my thing.]

-----------------------
Welcome to the E-Family
-----------------------
By Rob Spiegel

Dad picks up the television remote and turns on the set. He
clicks to the local weather. While the weather for the next few
days is posted, there's a horizontal scroll at the bottom of the
screen showing the closing prices on all his individual stocks.
He clicks over to the sports scores. Each game has a button that
allows him to block the score in case he wants to view the game
without knowing the outcome. After paging through completed
games, he clicks to the status of games in process, then on to
the schedule for upcoming games. Each posted game offers the
option to download the game to his set's memory for future
viewing. Instead he decides to watch a movie. He clicks over to
the Blockbuster channel and chooses from a selection that
includes virtually every movie ever made.

In the upstairs bedroom, his 11-year-old son has just logged onto
Sega's game channel. In spite of valiant efforts by Nintendo,
Sony and Microsoft, Sega still holds the top spot for 3D visuals.
He doesn't have to wear those uncomfortable cheap glasses to get
the virtual reality effect either. In the next room, mom sits on
the bed typing notes onto her laptop as she watches Alan
Greenspan lecture on the mistakes the Federal Reserve made in the
early years of the 00s, before they figured out that interest
rate levels have no effect on the growth rate of an economy
that's racing with productivity gains. This is her last semester
of coursework toward her Harvard MBA through the school's
e-correspondence program.

Meanwhile, down in the basement, their teenage daughter and her
friends are practicing a line dance made popular by a group of
young men with bright eyes, crooked smiles and cool haircuts.
They click back over the program again and again, watching each
step, then pausing the action so they can try it themselves.
When they get it just right, they turn on the set's camera and
run through the steps so they can email it to their friend Jacy
who's stuck babysitting her little brothers.

This scene takes place in the mid 00s, in the 15th year of
America's longest economic expansion. Things change and they
don't change. Mom and dad still worry about their daughter's
taste in boys and they wonder if the games their son plays on
Sega are too violent. Mom struggles to get through her MBA while
working part-time with a French investment bank and serving as
the local PTA vice president. Dad's wondering if it was a
mistake choosing the work-at-home option with the medical
consulting firm he joined two years ago. The choice allows the
family to live in a small town on the shores of Lake Michigan,
but sometimes he suspects the decision put him to the slow track
with the company.

What does the future hold for the Internet and ecommerce?
Mainstream Americans will likely integrate the Internet into most
facets of their lives, from television to education, work and
social interaction. Think of the telephone and television.
During the 1900s, these communication devices become central to
our lives. The dimensions of the Internet are far greater than
the narrow scope of the telephone and television, so we can
probably expect it to provide a far deeper integration into our
business, family and social lives. It will likely change our
lives in profound ways for the next few decades.

For one, it will change our need to live in large metropolitan
areas. Our migration to cities was founded on the need to
process goods that required massive labor and frequent
face-to-face communication. Our primary output is now
information, and communication, especially in business, is much
more efficient through the Internet. We no longer need to work
in close proximity, elbow-to-elbow after a crowded and
inefficient commute.

The companies that can anticipate these changing needs will
prosper through the coming massive social and business changes.
Will Blockbuster alter its delivery system to become an
Internet-based tool for people to rent movies? Or will a
conglomerate like AOLTimeWarner take this space? Perhaps movie
studios will rent directly to consumers through a common search
engine. Certainly we won't go to the video store if we can peruse
every movie ever made on our television screen. The companies
that anticipate changing needs and adapt quickly will prosper.
Those that don't will perish.
