Hi,
Hope you've had a productive week since we last met. I finally
managed to complete the Keyword Selection page I announced to you
a few weeks ago (the one with the Goto and SpellWeb tools). It's
still at the same URL, but has now been plumbed into the rest of
the site. If you're a new subscriber, or missed out earlier, this
page is to help you quickly find the right keywords for your meta
tags (I also use it to find terms to bid on at Goto.com). You'll
probably want to use this page a lot, so remember to bookmark it
when you arrive.

I've been forced to make a few painful decisions about Biz Bits.
Thinking you might find it instructive I thought I'd relate what
steps I've decided to take and why.
Though I enjoy putting the issue together each week, it's a lot
of work. Including time spent on research, a Biz Bits issue takes
me almost 2 full days to prepare. Unfortunately, I just don't
have that much free time these days.
Looking at what I do each week, I've identified two areas that
are particularly labor intensive, the 'Sites to check out' and
'Tidbits' sections.
Concerning the former, I usually come across around 5 or 6
interesting links during course of the week. The remainder to
make up the 10 I publish have to be found. That takes time.
Although I've announced once before that 'Sites to check out'
won't always contain 10 new links each week, to date I've been
unable to bring myself to include less. :-)
Selecting the 20 or so news items for 'TIDBITS' each week
requires the reading of literally hundreds of press releases. I
always end up with more interesting bits to share with you than I
have space to include and spend additional time editing my
selection down.
Having identified that these two sections consume the most time
compared to content derived, I then turned to the results of the
survey we ran a month or so ago to find out which sections of Biz
Bits you value most:
Score* Section Vote Range
----- ------------------ --------------------------------
[8.4] Feature Article - Highest Vote [9] Lowest Vote [7]
[7.5] Voting Booth - Highest Vote [9] Lowest Vote [1]
[7.0] Introduction - Highest Vote [9] Lowest Vote [3]
[7.0] Tools at Now Sell! - Highest Vote [9] Lowest Vote [5]
[6.9] Sites to Check Out - Highest Vote [9] Lowest Vote [3]
[6.9] Tidbits - Highest Vote [9] Lowest Vote [5]
[4.8] Classified Ads - Highest Vote [6] Lowest Vote [1]
*Range of votes is 0-9 where 9 is the maximum value.
As you can see, after 'Classified Ads', 'Tidbits' and 'Sites to
Check Out' are the least popular sections amongst those who cast
their votes (not by much I know, but the least popular all the
same).
So, it would seem that the two sections requiring the most time
to prepare, are also the least likely to be missed ('Classified
Ads' has to stay, I need it for ad swaps, and it's not that time
consuming anyway!).
It is also interesting to consider that these sections take
longer to prepare than the writing of a Feature Article, which
came out as the clear favorite in our poll. A case of misdirected
energies? It certainly looks that way.
Of the two, the Tidbits section is the most time consuming, so if
saving time is my goal, this is a good place to start. Taking
everything into consideration, I have therefore decided to drop
'Tidbits' completely for the time being. Sorry to those who will
miss it. :-)
Since I find several new sites for 'Sites to check out' during
the course of a normal week, there is no need to cut the entire
section. Just those additional links that have to be searched
out. So from now on, 'Sites to check out' will be reduced from
ten, to five new links a week (I bet most of you don't have the
time to visit ten in any case!).
Besides giving me more time generally, these changes will also
enable me to write more articles. A sensible move as it allows
the sharing of more valuable 'how-to' information with you,
rather than expending a lot of energy on activities that are
almost 'clerical' in nature.
Regarding articles, I'm not just thinking of Biz Bits, but of
self promotion too. Submitting articles to other ezines is one of
the best means of publicizing yourself or your business, and also
gives the best bang for your buck.
If you don't know how to go about promoting yourself through the
use of other ezines, Rick Beneteau's book EZineMoney show's you
how. Here's my affiliate URL (it's a 2-tier program if you wish
to join): http://www.ezinemoney.net/sgx/d.cgi?1869
I hope you'll continue to enjoy Biz Bits in the new format which
will start next week. If you have any comments, just drop me a
line as usual.

askSam Systems have released SurfSaver 2.0, an updated version of
their shareware browser add-on. SurfSaver allows you to store Web
pages directly from your browser into a searchable database of
folders on your PC.
What's the difference between SurfSaver and choosing "Save As" in
the browser?
SurfSaver creates a *searchable archive* of the pages you save.
When you choose "Save As" in a browser, you simply have an HTML
file ... you have no way of searching and organizing those files.
SurfSaver 2.0 includes several powerful new features for
organizing Web pages. In addition, the new version is available
as a free ad-supported download.
SurfSaver Pro, a paid version without advertising, costs $29.95
and adds the ability to share SurfSaver folders in a network.
A new feature in SurfSaver 2.0 lets you save selected links (or
an entire page) and all linked pages. This enables you to easily
turn any list of links on the Web into a searchable database on
your computer. Very handy.
Other enhancements to version 2.0 include the ability to download
multiple levels of a site to browse (or search) off-line, and
organize your information using a Filing Cabinet and Folder
metaphor.
