Hi,
I was trying to keep it brief today - I'm sure there's more than
enough of my ramblings in part 2 for even the most ardent of
fans! ;-) However, I was interested by a couple of new sites I
came across during the week and before I knew it - as you can see
below - I'd blabbered on for another page!
Nationwide flower delivery services have proved successful. Why
not do the same with cakes? Those would seem to be the thoughts
of the people behind CAKEUSA.com, a new Internet start-up based
in St. Louis, Missouri.
This is what they say, "Here's the situation - you live in Los
Angeles and your mother lives in Chicago. You are not going to be
able to make it for her birthday, but you still want to be a part
of it. Why not send her a birthday cake?"
You can place an order on the CAKEUSA.com web site
http://www.cakeusa.com for a customized, decorated cake, have
it baked fresh and delivered by a bakery in the hometown or local
area of the intended recipient.
They accomplish this through a national network of affiliated
bakeries that prepare and deliver the orders received through the
website and forwarded to them by CAKEUSA.com.
A simple yet innovative service. A smart idea requiring nothing
more complicated than networking with bakeries across the country
and paying them for their services. I think it's great, with one
reservation: the possible expenditure and time required to
educate the public. Still they could always join forces with
flower delivery services, "Why not send a delicious cake to go
with your flowers?" Why not indeed!
Here's another one that caught my eye. "One hundred million 35mm
and Advanced Photo System (APS) film-using households can mail
their rolls of film for developing, then preview the images
online, share their favorites in free online albums, and order
only the prints they want!"
So said Club Photo http://www.clubphoto.com in announcing its
new Pick Your Photo service, which costs only $1 per roll of
film. The service enables everyday film camera users to easily
share their favorite pictures with friends and family all over
the world - without the need to scan the images, or upload them
over a modem line. Users can instantly preview, share, and order
just the prints and quantity they want online.
Why am I telling you about these services? Because - the B2B
market aside - this the area in which I expect to see smaller
online companies thrive. Simple, creative ideas for products and
services that benefit certain groups of people in their everyday
lives.
Today there are hundreds of small, nondescript stores online.
However, for long term survival in the online B2C marketplace,
you really will need to have something special to offer. Everyday
consumer goods and services just won't cut it. As I see it,
eventually, retail market leaders with strong brand recognition -
online or of - will squash the competition, just as they have in
traditional 'bricks and mortar' marketplaces. Whatever your take
on Amazon, it isn't continually expanding its product range
without reason. (The latest addition is kitchen appliances).
Mainstream retail is also perfect for globalization. How many
brand items are now made under licence in 100's of countries
worldwide? How many retail chains have outlets overseas, or could
easily partner with suppliers in these markets? The day will come
when market leaders won't have to charge high overseas shipping:
The items will be sent to you from a local source. Brand
familiarity and the value-added services that these companies can
provide will ensure the growth of their dominance.
When trying to come up with an idea for your online business,
think about ALL the experience you have, in EVERY field.
Brainstorm and write down ideas about any related product or
service that would make life easier, or save money. It doesn't
matter if it sounds crazy - write it down anyway and keep going.
Later you can investigate your ideas further. Choose the best,
and from these asses what might be workable, identifying grey
areas for which there may be solutions. Try to come up with
something that's a bit different, but not so different that you
will have to spend time and money educating potential customers.
Don't pin your long-term hopes on any venture where you will face
competition from large organizations, unless you can offer
something special that they can't or don't want to. If you'd like
to sell general items to help you along until you're ready for
the 'main event,' take advantage of one of the many services
online that offer free storefronts.
On a side note, if you're not already established, avoid the
temptation of going into the 'Internet marketing/opportunity'
arena. Your chances of any real success there are getting slimmer
by the day. The market is already crowded, plus there are now
some real top-notch sites that you will be hard-pushed to compete
with. You'll find much greener pastures in other areas.

If you use FileMaker Pro 5 to power your web site, take note.
Blue World Communications, Inc. www.blueworld.com has announced
that it has discovered three serious security holes in the Web
Companion provided in FileMaker Pro 5.
According to Blue World, the security holes are a result of the
introduction of new XML and email capabilities and are as
follows:
1. Anyone can view all data in a FileMaker Pro 5 Web accessible
database regardless of security preferences. That could include
sensitive data contained within FileMaker Pro 5 databases such as
credit card numbers, passwords, employee records, etc.
2. Anyone can use the Web Companion's email capabilities to
retrieve all data contained in any FileMaker Pro 5 Web Companion
enabled database regardless of security preferences. This makes
it possible to access and rapidly distribute across the Internet
information not intended for viewing by the general public.
3. Anyone can use Web Companion's email capabilities to send
anonymous or impersonated email, making it virtually impossible
to trace the origin of malicious activity.
Sounds pretty bad huh? I was thinking of possibly using FileMaker
Pro online myself. Still, by the time I get around to *that*,
they'll no doubt have fixed the problem.
I should point out that Blue World have a degree of interest
here: one of the solutions they suggest is to use their own Lasso
Web Data Engine as a secure proxy to FileMaker Pro 5 Web
Companion.
If you'd like to know more, there's a Blue World FileMaker Pro
Talk email discussion forum. For details visit

Another security hole - this time in Eudora (as usual, Windows
only). The problem relates to an omission on Qualcomm's part to
have Eudora warn you when you click on a link pointing to a .lnk
file (the extension for Windows shortcut files), as it does with
.exe, .com, or .bat files.
A hacker could send two attachments, an executable file and a
hyperlink that points to the other attachment. If the user clicks
on the link, the executable code will run without displaying the
warnings, allowing the executable to do whatever the hacker wants
without the user's knowledge.
Full details, including how to fix the problem can be found on
the Peacefire site at:

I have to hold my hand up and say I'm sometimes guilty of that
one. When doing your own proofreading it can be easy to miss this
kind of mistake.
Here are a few often confused words which sound alike (known as
homophones), that you should also check for:
its (possessive pronoun "of or belonging to it")
it's (contraction for "it is")
their (possessive pronoun "belonging to them")
they're (contraction for "they are")
there (adverb: "that place or position")
whose (possessive form of "who")
who's (contraction for "who is")
your (possessive form of "you")
you're (contraction for "you are")
Azam--noticed your comment about wishing you could simply click
to ban a specific address--hotmail and netscape webmail both
offer that feature. I think ureach does, too.
Hope you find this info useful.
Keep up the great zine.

Thanks Judy, glad you enjoy BB. Personally I only use free web
accounts as 'dumping ground' for the type of email where I know
99% I won't read (like the kind you get after a post to FFA
page). Since I have to pay for both my internet access and the
phone call, it would be too costly to use them for regular mail.
Besides which, Eudora has a *brilliant* search function which I
find indispensable.
