Have you found Internet business to be harder work than you
originally imagined?

YES! >>>> 77%

Internet business is harder work than I thought it would be!

NO! >>>> 23%

It's more-or-less as I expected!

ERR? >>>> 0%

I'm not sure... depends...?

[Azam: The number of votes was down a bit last week, but even so,
it would seem safe to assume that the majority of people that
have been drawn to the Internet in the hopes of building a
profitable business, have found it harder than they expected.

Personally, I didn't expect it too be easy from a workload point
of view. I echo Paula's comments below, in that I have always
worked hard for everything I have ever achieved in life, and
don't expect something for nothing.

What did surprise me however, was how difficult it can be to
attract visitors in the particular area in which I operate, and
the (rapidly increasing) amount of competition, especially in
terms of search engine ranking.

My biggest regret was spending a year (and lots of money!)
looking at other off-line business opportunities when my company
had to cease trading in '97, instead of immediately jumping
online and establishing a position at a time when it was easier
to do so.

My advice to you is to start a business in which you can be
amongst the first, yet where there is existing demand. Even if
that means entering a field which is not your natural first
choice. Build your own niche where you don't have to compete
head-on with hundreds of thousands of other sites offering the
same or similar content. Provide quality and you will reap the
rewards. Guaranteed.

Ken Evoy (yet again!), in his free "Affiliate Masters" email
course, [mailto:tamsinfo-sitesell.net] suggests a way you can use
the search engines to help you identify areas of low supply and
high demand. Although Ken is referring to marketing products as
an affiliate, you can use the same methodology to help you spot
possible niche business opportunities.

Ken talks about using the Goto Keyword Suggestion Tool
http://www.nowsell.com/site_promotion/keywords-tools.html to
search for keywords that relate to topics you are interested in
and knowledgeable about.

A number in the left column of the Suggestion Tool results tells
you how many times people have searched for your keyword, or any
phrase containing it, in the preceding month. As Ken says, this
gives you an indication of the [relative] demand for each
keyword.

Save your results and go to AltaVista to look up each of the
keywords Goto supplied (remember to surround phrases in quotation
marks when you search, so that the words aren't searched for
individually).

Write down the number of pages AltaVista finds for each keyword;
this is the supply of sites for that keyword. Compare the number
of sites found (supply) with the number of searches made on Goto
(demand).

Areas worthy of further investigation are those that reveal a
high demand (many searches at Goto), coupled with a low supply
(relatively few pages at AltaVista).

Note that this will only provide you with a rough guide based on
comparative keyword popularity at Goto. Goto's audience reach is
only approximately 7% of all searchers. Nevertheless, it's a good
starting point.]

Voter Feedback:
···············

YES!

Yes I found working on Internet much harder that I thought at
first. I don't know why people (including my poor self!) have a
tendency of thinking that every thing on the net is FREE and EASY
and FUN Too!!

In order to get thinks going on the right direction, I end up
putting a LOT of effort on my internet business!...

I have to admit though... I Love it!!! So now my premium reason
for complaining is... gone with the wind!

But afterall..... every task that we put our minds to needs at
least a little bit of effort... so if we want to make it a
success....

Let's get to work!!!!

NO!

No. I never expected something for nothing. It's never happened
before in my life, and I surely don't expect it to happen now!

However---if I work hard enough....well, who knows?

Small Sites Survive the Internet Roller Coaster
-----------------------------------------------
By Rob Spiegel

What does the Internet stock crash mean to the small Web store?
At first glance the downturn look daunting if not downright
discouraging. If major sites like CDNow and DrKoop are on the
ropes, how can a tiny site selling refrigerator magnets
(Fridgedoor.com) possible survive? Well, in cyberspace, tiny
niche sites stand a better chance than mass-market stores that
spends $40 to $80 to obtain each new customer. In addition to
the acquisition costs, big sites spend a fortune on overhead.

Meanwhile, as the big Internet retailers wring their hands and
watch Nasdaq sink even further, small Net retailers are making
sizable sales on top of very small investments. ZDNet recently
compiled a list of Net millionaires
(http://zdnet.com/yil/content/mag/0002/learning.html). In the
rush to cover Net billionaires, most business journalists have
overlooked the millionaire on the Net, the small site owner with
a great little idea. The concepts behind these successful Net
plays are clever, but they were not expensive to launch.

Pamela Bergeson played around on eBay until she become very
comfortable with the auction process. She then contacted a
company that sold excess hotel-room, cruise-line and
vacation-package inventory. She put together vacation packages
and successfully auctioned them through her site
Bid4Vacations.com.

Ben Cathers' gaming site pulled in a disappointing $13 during its
first month. But over a couple of years this 15-year-old built a
full teen portal backed by venture capital. He began at
12-years-old with a free gaming site that drew hordes of teens.
He hired an ad rep firm that was so impressed with his traffic
that it invested in his site. He built it into the portal
PhatSTART, which sells teen clothing and provides dating advice,
dairies and sports scores.

Jeff Johnson and Michael Waters wanted to open an underwear
store. They lined up vendors and picked a name, Underneath. But
they experienced sticker shock when they started shopping for
mall space. Frustrated but not discouraged, the two friends
tried the concept as an online store. Bingo! Underneath.com was
a hit with the press and buyers. Launched in 1997, the site saw
900 percent growth between the years 1998 and 1999.

In 1995, Eugenie Diserio was a 40-year-old, out-of-work single
mom who moved into her parents house to get a new start. She
responded to AOL's call for infopreneurs with an idea to launch
an astrology service. She had studied astrology informally for
13 years. AOL was skeptical, but Diserio persisted and finally
convinced them to give it a shot. Astronet soon became one of
AOL most popular sites. Last year she sold the site to Hearst
for more than $1 million. She continues on as a columnist and
celebrity persona.

There is still plenty of room in cyberspace for a great little
idea. You can find a number of Web services that offer
inexpensive Web hosting for niche sites. There are over a dozen
that give away Web sites. Services such as Bizland.com and
Bigstep.com provide small sites for free. These services provide
full shopping cart and credit card acceptance capabilities. The
host makes it money by selling advertising and taking small
transaction fees on credit card purchases. The hosts also change
modest fees ($50 per month and up) to customers whose sites grow
beyond the small fee space.

Larger services such as Yahoo! and America Online also offer
inexpensive hosting to small Web stores. Yahoo! and AOL are not
free, but they begin their services at modest monthly fees ($100
to $300 per month) and they provide both traffic and reliability.
Most of the hosts also provide plenty of information on
shoestring promotional tactics such as affiliation programs.

As you watch major Web monsters crumble while their venture
capitalists dash to infrastructure companies or back to the brick
industries, remember that we've entered an era that is very
friendly to niche sites. As business journalists cover the
falling sky of big Net plays, they're overlooking an
entrepreneurial renaissance of niche merchants.

Cool site: Bizland.com. This free site will give you 35M in
space for your niche store. The site also offers a full course
in Web marketing.
