Voter Feedback:
···············
YES!
Yes I do pay for advertising as I find it more reliable. Free
advertising sometimes works fine. But I find it is more time
consuming than paid advertising.
And since time is money.... Well I prefer spare my time for
something that is worth it!

[Azam: Yes, Johanne. Nothing is *really* free. Some free
advertising does work, but you usually pay with the extra time
and energy spent on getting your ad seen. The trick is to find
the free resources that provide the biggest 'bang' for the least
amount of energy. Top of my list in this respect are ezine ad
swaps, which take no more time to arrange than purchasing an ad
spot, and can be just as effective.]
NO!
Hi Azam,
Mostly I use free promotion right now. Hope to change that this
summer after we move.

On the Internet Content Rules
-----------------------------
By Rob Spiegel
Recently I fell in love with an Internet site, NetRadio.com.
It's certainly not a new site. It was not even new to me when I
went to it a couple of weeks ago. I was ripe for its
programming. I was tired of my CDs and my local radio stations.
Let's try something new, I thought. Now NetRadio.com plays all
day long. In the early morning before sunrise, I turn it to
Quiet Classics. At dawn I switch to Chamber music or Baroque and
Before. By mid-morning I'm on to Celtic. At noon I switch over
to British Invasion, then on to Psychedelic Rock for mid
afternoon. The early evening is just right for Blues or
Bluegrass, and mid-evening is time for Folk, Piano or Broadway.
NetRadio.com lists each song as it's played, giving the artist
and song title. And there's a button you can click to buy the
music. Once every 30 to 40 minutes, a short ad reminds me that I
can buy the music by clicking the button. Compared with
commercial radio, the ad is no interruption at all. Compared with
my CD collection NetRadio.com is an explosion of new music. There
is little repetition. I hear music I never hear on the radio. I
hear British Invasion music I haven't heard since it was
originally played on my teenage transistor radio. "7 and 7 Is"
by Love? Solo music by Sid Barret?
I know you're not reading this column to learn about my musical
preferences (which are wide and almost indiscriminant), so I'll
get to the point. Commerce over the Internet never falls far from
the tree of content. NetRadio.com will steal my CD purchases
CDNow and Amazon.com. They both have their own version of
content, but I like NetRadio.com better. I go to the site
specifically for the content. As long as I'm here, why not buy
the Yellow Submarine CD. After all, I just got reminded it has
"Hey Bulldog" on it.
The Internet began as a vehicle to deliver content and it hasn't
lost that primary role. When people shop online, they usually go
get information as well products or services. If someone logs on
for garden tools, chances are they also want some gardening
information about how to grow flowers or vegetables in their own
climate.
But even more to the point, they frequently go to content sites
and buy products or services that are sitting around the edges of
the content. Ask any Web-based e-marketing consultant. "How to
you get clients?" You get clients by giving them free content on
Web marketing and making your books or services available
alongside the content.
For this content-marketing to be effective, it has to be sincere.
It can't be a tease. There is no way on earth that I could go
to a site that previews snippets of the music I want to hear.
Nor can a marketing consultant gain clients by explaining how
much she knows about Web marketing. If you want to sell through
the use of content, you have to deliver the goods. My goodness,
there's Richie Havens doing a version of "Here Comes the Sun."
The quality of your content will determine your credibility to
Internet users. If they love and trust your content, you will be
predisposed to purchasing your related products or services. I
like the free music I hear on NetRadio.com. I intend to purchase
my next CD from the site partly because I have that precious
sense of loyalty you get from a site that over-delivers to your
expectations. Now excuse me, I think I going to buy that live
Loreena McKennitt album with "Cymbeline."
Cool site: Emarketer.com. Now here is a wonder content site.
Need some stats on e-tail sales? Want some reports on various
sectors of the Internet economy? Could you use a list of sites
that offer free affiliations? How about links to every subject?
Emarketer.com provides a cornucopia of free information about
the Internet economy.
