Hi,

I've been taking a bit of a breather over the last couple of days
(I really needed it!). Still working, just less. It gave me
chance to reflect on the rushing by of another month, and the
rapid approach of 2001 (was all that Y2K stuff really a year
ago?). It also provided me with some space to think and
re-prioritize my scheduled activities, taking into account the
time I've lost over the last few weeks.

Last issue I mentioned that I was having some problems with CGI
scripts on the Now Sell! site, which aren't printing out header
and footer files. These had been included in the scripts via SSI,
which worked fine at my previous host.

My hopes of quickly getting the site back to full functionality
soon began to fade, when I learnt that the servers of my new host
don't parse the output of CGI scripts. After studying at the
Apache site and others, I found that such a set up is quite
common.

I don't really want to include the full HTML code for the header
and footer sections within the scripts. The only other option is
modifying them slightly so they reference and print out the
files, without using SSI. I have yet to figure that one out (to
get it to work is perhaps more accurate!).

As a result of the sudden move and redesign, many income-
generating tasks have fallen by the wayside over the last two
weeks. Since I now really must get on with those, I can't afford
to devote much time to fixing the scripts at present. My
apologies to you if you use them often.

Of course, this only proves what I said to you back in August -
if you're planning on moving hosts before the holiday season, do
it now, because there are always unforeseen problems! In case
you're a new subscriber, and now wondering why on earth I did
choose to change hosts at this time, problems with my previous
host left me little option.

A belated Happy Thanks Giving if you celebrated, and salam to you

Registering at numerous ezine directories, or other Web sites which list ezines, is a simple method that goes some way to help. Maintained for the benefit of visitors, these listings also provide publishers the opportunity of increased exposure, through adding their ezine to the database. Don't expect to see hundreds, or even tens of new subscribers each day from most of these sites. It just doesn't work like that. I mean, how often do you go to an ezine directory looking for ezines to subscribe to? In my opinion, not many other people do either. At least not for commonly covered topics. Of course other publishers often investigate the listings after submitting their own. For the majority of subscribers, ezines and newsletters are things they tend to come across by chance, rather than as the result of a specific search. Few people log-on thinking "I want to find a new marketing ezine to subscribe to." They're surfing and come across them at sites they visit, or read a recommendation or an ad in another ezine. Having said that, ezine directories should not be ignored. Especially if you're operating on a budget. The thing is, although you might not get many subscribers per day, your listing is permanent. If your publication appears at enough directories, over the course of a year it can mean hundreds, possibly thousands of new subscribers. And they're all free. In addition, many of these sites allow you to include your Web site URL. Those which use static, as opposed to dynamically generated pages (which can't be indexed by search engine spiders) will improve your site's link popularity, and thus your search engine position. Still, for it to be really worthwhile, you want to be able to list your ezine quickly and easily in as many directories as possible. As with most other things, the key to speed is preparation. Before you go online, open a new text file. This wants to be a plain text file, not a Word document. In it write: * Two versions of the title of your ezine or newsletter. A short one at 50 characters or less (simply the name of the ezine). A longer title of up to 100 characters, incorporating several of your most important keywords. * Three versions of your ezine description. I suggest a full description of up 250 characters, another of up to 200 characters, and a sort description of just 150 characters. Remember to put your most important keywords in each, adding more as space allows. As some directories allow the use of HTML commands in the description field, you might want to prepare a duplicate of each using HTML formatting for added impact. * A list of up to 15 keywords relevant to your publication. These are words and short phrases you want searchers to find your ezine under. As with your title and description, different directories set different size limits. Some allow only 5 keywords, others, 6, 8, 10, 12, or 15. For this reason, when composing your list, it's essential that you order it in relation to keyword importance. Start with your most important keyword, and work your way down, with the least relevant word or phrase at the end. Separate terms with commas, and don't include any line breaks or carriage returns. * The main URL of your Web site. * The URL to your Ezine information/sign-up page. * The URL to a sample issue (if you have one). * The URL to ezine archives (if you have any). * The email address used to subscribe. * The email address used to unsubscribe. * The approximate number of subscribers. * Your full name * Company/Organization name. * A contact email address that may be published online. * A private contact email address (not to be published). Don't worry - no single directory will request all this information. But since you'll need different elements for different directories, it makes sense to keep all the details in one place. Once you've finished, save the file in a logical location together with other ezine related material. Create a shortcut (alias) to it in an easily accessible place (perhaps your desktop or main menu), so that you can always open it without digging through folders. Besides many other useful features (the character count of selected text, for example), it provides you with 100 clipboards which can be saved through restarts.
