Hi,
If you were reading last week, you'll remember I was going away
hours after mailing you. Well, my trip took longer than expected,
and I returned home exhausted.
Knowing I have to go off again for a few days this weekend, I
decided to delay this issue further. The idea being to make it a
replacement for both the missed and coming Saturday issues. The
next issue of Biz Bits will now be on Saturday the 24th of March.
Thanks to all that wrote in support of my comments on Goto's new
pricing. I've now caught up on most of my email, so you should
have had a reply. I wrote that piece the day Goto notified
advertisers. Since then I've read the opinions of many that feel
much the same. Looks like Goto's competitors are in for a boost!

This week's article is co-authored by myself, and Biz Bits
subscriber, David Raasch. I'm mentioning it here, not because of
the content, but because of how the piece came about. It nicely
illustrates the theme of an article I wrote a few weeks ago,
"Your Most Powerful Weapon," where I discussed the importance of
networking online, and how to do it right.
Every once in a while, David drops me a line. Usually a short
note, often thanking me for something in Biz Bits, occasionally
asking a brief question. The point is, his communications are
friendly, genuine and ongoing. Unlike so many, he doesn't simply
pump me for information and then disappear. He reciprocates.
Consciously or not, he's using the power of networking.
On this occasion, David wrote to tell me about a new piece of
software he's using. Impressed, he thought I might want to do a
review in Biz Bits, if I felt it of benefit to readers. To that
end, he provided me with a brief overview and a regular (not
affiliate), link to the site.
As it happens, I already knew about the software. However,
although it appears impressive, there isn't a version suitable
for my Mac, and so I can't try it myself.
Now, because of the relationship David had established with me,
and because he approached me in the correct way, I made David an
offer: Write me a simple, unbiased review, join the affiliate
program, include your affiliate link, and I'll publish it.
Both parties win. I get a review on something I think you should
now about, David gets some publicity and the chance to earn a
little commission from the thousands of Biz Bits subscribers.
Make sense? I hope so.
I'm sure David won't mind me saying he's no Internet "Guru" or
"Expert." In fact, I think this is his first published article.
He's a small guy trying to make a living online - just like YOU.
But instead of thinking about instant profits; asking me to join
some program, or wanting me to help him do this, that or the
other for free, he focused on friendship and making contacts.
As is so often the case, he profited through the back door.
Perhaps not greatly in this instance, but it cost him nothing.
And he's opened a door.
Positive networking can add more to your bottom line in the long
term than any other online activity. Simply present yourself
well. Be helpful, friendly and most of all, genuine.
Sometimes you'll draw a blank, but I guarantee if you make it a
habit, all sorts of opportunities will come your way. In fact -
and despite what you may think - many successful business
partnerships have grown from such humble beginnings.
In the end, I decided to add some background material to David's
review, thinking you'd find it useful. I hope you enjoy it, but

"INSTANT CONTENT AND TRAFFIC!"

We all want to boost Web site traffic. The cheapest, and perhaps
most effective strategies, are also the oldest:
Search engines and link trading.
However, with all the competition these days, appearing anywhere
near the top of search engine listings requires a highly focused,
niche site. The tighter you focus on a subject, the more relevant
a search engine will rate your site for that topic. As you
broaden your focus to include more topics, your site's relevancy
for any one is watered down by the others.
In addition, being tightly focused, you will have less sites to
compete with for rankings, making it easier to get to the top.
Plus, all your visitors are targeted, having searched for the
narrow specification you cover. They are your perfect customers.
And likely to visit again because you have information concerning
EXACTLY what they are interested in.
Swapping links with Web sites that cover subjects similar to your
own, has always been a good way to increase traffic. And again,
it's quality, highly targeted visitors you get.
However, trading links has recently gained a whole new level of
importance. Search engines now use a site's "link popularity" as
a measure of it's quality. Put simply, when other Web sites link
to yours, search engines add ranking points, effectively boosting
your site's position in search results.
The more sites that link to you, the more points you get. If
these sites cover the same or similar subjects to your own, you
get extra points. And if the sites linking to you have good link
popularity themselves, you get even more points!
Search engines don't give anything for outbound links, except in
one special case. That's when you have hundreds of them. Enough
to be considered a directory. Then search engines regard the site
as a useful focal point, or hub, and boost its ranking.
WHAT YOU NEED TO DO
Step one then, is to create content tightly focused on a
particular subject. Not too difficult, except that in order to
keep people coming back, you need quite a lot of it. And that's
the problem: Creating content takes time.
Step two involves visiting search engines, to find quality sites
covering topics similar to your own. Once located, you need to
ascertain the email address of the site owner, add their link to
a page on your site, and then write to them, politely asking for
a link back. Again, not difficult, but try doing it a hundred
times and see how long THAT takes!
A NEW FRIEND
For the first time, there's now an alternative:
Zeus.
An intelligent robot that builds links to your site quickly and
easily, whilst creating content at the same time!
Zeus does all the time consuming legwork - and much of the
brain-work - for you. AND, the software is available in a
fully-functional FREEWARE version!
The only major problem with Zeus, is it doesn't run on my trusty
Mac. Since most Mac users are busy making artwork, magazines,
cartoons, movies or music, I don't expect the minority of us
using them online will ever get our own Zeus to try. Pity.
Feeling you would benefit from learning more about Zeus, I've
enlisted the help of David Raasch, from FrontierBlazers
Web-Hosting. David, a long-time subscriber, has been "playing"
with Zeus for a few weeks now, so I'll let him take over from
here ....
THE "ZEUS" SOFTWARE
Zeus is a "smart" Internet robot that travels the Web, analyzing
and sorting through Web sites to create a themed link directory
for you. Zeus then helps you send out emails to the sites in your
directory, asking for reciprocal links. Those who agree are
ranked HIGHER in your directory's listings!
Zeus saves you a LOT of time and effort! It can spend hours, even
days, hunting for sites, unattended. And each site it finds not
only brings you more content, but also a possible link-back.
TRAINING YOUR ROBOT
Although Zeus is a true time-saver, you have to "train" him
first. Once downloaded and installed, you first decide what kind
of "theme site directory" you wish to make.
"Theme sites" are Web sites grouped around one specific topic or
theme. For Example, "Animals" is a broad topic. "Pets" is
narrower. "Dogs" is even more focused. "Poodles" is very tight.
What specific, focused content would attract visitors to your
web-site?
Choose your topic, and research keywords related to it. Launch
Zeus in "teach mode" and input at least 100 keywords or phrases,
about the kind of Web sites you are interested in.
Here's where you make Zeus REALLY smart: not only do you tell
Zeus which words he should find, but you also assign each of them
a UNIQUENESS factor:
"Very Unique," "Unique," "Slight Unique," "Common," and "Ignore."
These five ratings tell Zeus to make some of your words more
important than others, helping the robot identify your future
theme sites with greater accuracy.
LET LOOSE THE HOUNDS !!
Using "Zeus" is like having your own Internet Bloodhound! He
travels from site to site, comparing text on their pages to the
database of keywords you taught him. Each site is given a score.
If a site doesn't match your criteria closely enough, Zeus gives
it a low score and discards it. Only the high-scoring "good
stuff" is kept.
Before moving on to the next site, Zeus also grabs all the
outbound links and flags them as places to visit later.
Like the "Energizer Bunny", Zeus keeps on going and going ...
sniffing out web-sites, evaluating them, and storing their links.
SORTING THROUGH THE RESULTS
Just back after a long nap under an oak tree, it's time to see
what your bloodhound has found.
Go through the list, and delete sites that don't match what you
had in mind. (Zeus isn't perfect; he does get it wrong sometimes.
But "tweaking your keywords" makes Zeus smarter and smarter as
you go!)
Look over each "good site" briefly. Zeus displays a list of email
addresses he pulled from the site. It's your job to pick out the
address that probably belongs to the site's webmaster. This will
be useful to you for link-exchange requests.
Finally, put each "good site" into a category you create. For
instance, if your topic is "poodles", your categories might be
"feeding", "exercise", "selecting your poodle", "puppy care",
etc. These categories will be individual link-pages within your
theme directory.
Press a button and ... Presto!
Zeus creates your theme directory AND uploads it to your Web
site!
A categorized directory of links, built around a common, focused
theme! That's valuable content, folks.
GETTING SITES TO LINK BACK TO YOU
Zeus has a built-in Email Manager. You've already told Zeus which
email address belongs to the owner of each site in your
directory. Now it's time to send each of these people a nice
message. You ask them to link to you, pointing out that you've
already linked to them!
Once a webmaster responds with a "yes", they get a special bonus!
Clicking on a single check-box instructs Zeus to display this
nice webmaster's site HIGHER and MORE PROMINENTLY in your theme
directory's listings!
Tell this to your link-exchange candidates up-front, and they now
have an additional incentive to say "yes" ... and create a
traffic-producing, popularity boosting link to your site!
THINGS TO NOTE
1) Keep your theme tightly focused. The tighter, the better.
(Even after you've made and uploaded your directory several
times, you may want to go back and "weed out" sites that seem a
little off-topic.)
2) Yes, you'll get a lot of "big company web-sites" ... sites
whose owners probably wouldn't consider linking to such "small
fry" as yourself. However, the implied association of having
these "big name" sites in your directory, makes your site appear
more legitimate and valuable.
3) FREE is nice, but you have to put up with Cyber-robotics
banner ads in your directory. The paid version of Zeus ($195) is
ad-free, and the best option for a professional look.
4) Once you've uploaded your theme directory for the first time,
immediately start submitting its main page to search engines!
Although other pages might change as you restructure your
directory, this index page will keep the same name all the time.
Submit it early, and by the time it's listed, your directory will
probably contain hundreds of sites.
5) To get the most out of Zeus, you do have to put some time in.
You need to learn the software. Sorting through the sites Zeus
finds takes time. Tweaking your keywords takes time. But Zeus
will repay you with time-savings a hundred times over!
There's something satisfying about waking up in the morning, and
finding Zeus has identified 80-100 new theme sites for you
overnight!
SPECIAL TIP
Though Zeus' programmer doesn't support or encourage it, you can
easily run multiple versions of Zeus from your PC! I run 3
copies at once (making three separate theme directories) off my
lousy 56k dial-up connection!
