+ Introduction +
=====================

Hi,

First off today I want to apologise for forgetting to include the
unsubscribe address at the foot of posts from Biz Bits FFA. This
oversight has been corrected.

Also the invitation to join the FFA list that you received
perhaps didn't make it clear enough that Biz Bits FFA is a
completely separate list to Biz Bits. I suspect a few people
replied to the invitation in error, believing it to be necessary
in order to continue receiving Biz Bits. Sorry for the
inconvenience!

The FFA list was quite well received, with around 30% of Biz Bits
subscribers joining, though only a handful are active 'posters'
as yet.

Now I know I said I wanted to keep this list reserved exclusively
for members of the Biz Bits family, and I *do*. However, I've an
idea I'd like to run by you. To bring you better results, the
list could do with a few more subscribers...

What do you think of my opening the list for subscriptions from
the general public for a short "promotional" period of - say -
two weeks? After which I would again close it to non-subscribers
of Biz Bits, except for those that joined during this period?

Tell me what you think by sending an email to:
mailto:openFFA+nowsell.com and putting either "YES" or "NO" in
the subject line and any additional comments in the body.

                              <>

We've been together for a month now and I hope you find Biz Bits
both interesting and informative. As a friend I would like to ask
you and every other subscriber for a little bit of help.

I'd like to ask you to get just 2 of your friends to subscribe
before the next issue. I'm not offering anything in return except
my gratitude and the satisfaction of helping out a friend.

So I know who to thank please mail me personally with the email
addresses of the friends you referred mailto:azam+nowsell.com .
Put "My Friends" or something similar as the subject.

                              <>

Lastly, I want to remind you that I'm still giving away a Free Ad
insertion for every post published in Biz Bits throughout August!

Include your ad at the foot of your post and title it
"My free ad". I will insert it in the same or following issue
depending on available space.

Get your post in now!

How to Improve Your Search Engine Ranking
-------------------------------------------
by Riyaj Shaik, of Associate-it.com

Key to generating hits to your website is to get it listed
in the search engines. As you know, the top six search
engines account for most of the web traffic. So getting your
site listed in those search engines is the first and
foremost thing you should do? Each of the major search
engines has its own method of indexing your page. Although
you can only submit your URL to the search engines for your
site to be listed, there are things that you could do to
move your page up the index. We have written this extensive
article by breaking down, major search engines:

Alta Vista uses all words in your HTML, with the exception
of comments, and then the first few words will then be used
as a summary. This is assuming that you do not have any META
tags within your HTML. If you do use META tags, be sure to
include both "description" and "keywords". Alta Vista is
case sensitive, so keep this in mind when developing
keywords.

Excite develops summaries for your web page from the text
within your HTML. However, the search engine ignores META
tags. It tries to identify a dominant theme or term and uses
this for keywords that your page will be indexed by.
Basically this states that in order to produce effective
results, your page should contain only one theme. There is a
way around this however. Create your own "dominant theme"
within your HTML by developing a summary paragraph and enter
it multiple times within a comment tag. This will force
Excite to use this as your dominant theme and use it as a
summary for your site. Excite is case-sensitive.

HotBot, bases it index rankings upon META tags, both
"description" and "keyword". HotBot suggests using META tags
on not just your main page, but on your sub-pages as well.

Infoseek relies primarily on META tags within your HTML to
determine your index number. If there are no META tags, then
Infoseek looks at the first 250 characters on your page.
Therefore, if you are submitting your page to Infoseek, be
sure to insert a fair number of keywords with a META tag, as
well as including some keywords in the first 250 characters
on your page. Like Altavista and Excite, Infoseek is also
case-sensitive, so keep this in mind when creating your
keywords.

Lycos uses a sample portion of your page to use as an
abstract. It then uses a spider developed by them to
automatically choose the keywords that will be associated
with your page. The abstract and keywords chosen appear to
be totally random, but the use of META tags may force Lycos
to use at least some of the "description" and "keywords" in
the abstract.

Web Crawler relies on your META tags to determine your index
ranking. Be sure to use a somewhat large and descriptive
META Description tag, as this is what Webcrawler focuses on.

Yahoo is set up differently than the rest of the search
engines. Yahoo indexes websites into different categories.
The form asks for your URL, the title of your page, the
category or categories which you would like your site to be
placed under and a description of the your page. This is
all that they use to index your site, therefore, it does not
really matter what is in your HTML.

So before you submit make sure you have META tags in each
and every page of your site. Here is an example.

[html]
[head]
[title]Submit It!: Web site promotion and marketing.
[/title>]

[META Name="keywords" content="free web site submissions,
web site promotion, web site marketing, web site
advertising, free web page submissions, web page promotion,
web page marketing, web page advertising, url, search engine
listings, search engine submissions, search engine
registration, search engine secrets, promote submit url
submit it internet marketing search engines consulting
free"]

[META Name="description" content="The Net's most popular Web
site promotion tool. Use Associate It! to register your URL
with hundreds of search engines and directories."]

[!—This is the summary included in comments for search
engines like Excite: Web site URL submissions to over 400
search engines and directories. Get more hits to your web
pages with our free or full version URL announcement
service. Build traffic by promoting your web pages to all
the major search engines and directories. Effective Web
site marketing starts with search engine listings, effective
web site marketers start with Submit It! --]
[/head]

And as you may know, when you submit your URL to be indexed
all most all the search engines ask you to only submit your
main page, promising that eventually all the remaining pages
in your site will be indexed based on internal links within
your site. In most cases eventually turn out to be
years if not months. You loose all the traffic you could
have generated if you have indexed all your pages. Also some
times no matter what you do, you cannot have your main page
show up in top 50 search results for a specific key word.

Here is an alternative that we used very effectively. Create
a gateway page, just for the purpose of search engines,
concentrate on the keyword that you want it to be
indexed on, then place a link to your main page from that
page. We experienced this first had our self, no matter what
we did, we cannot have our main page show up for search
results based on keyword "affiliate programs". Our
home page shows up only if some one search for key words
"associate programs". So we created a page called
affiliateprograms.htm and we made sure that we only used
affiliate programs keyword on that page, didn't use the word
associate programs at all on that page, then indexed that
page with all search engines.

Also, we used the free deep submit script to submit all our
pages to 24 major search engines at a time. Deep submit is
nothing but submitting each and every page in your site to
search engines, if you do this manually it may take long
time, but by using our free submit script, you can do this
in a single click, the only thing you need to do is list all
the URL in your site, then sit back and watch our script do
the submission in real time. Feel free to use it at
http://associate-it.com/html/main/300free/. More often than
not some of the other pages in your site shows up high in
search results than your home page. So it is important to
index all the pages in your site. For example go to
http://www.excite.com and search for keyword "associate
programs" and see which page in our directory shows up in
top 10 search results. Yes it is how we rate and rank
programs page, not our main page.

You did all you could to get high ranking in search engine,
but it still didn't work, then consider other services like
Link-O-Matic that submits your site to well over 500 free
for all links pages. They claim that more people find other
sites though links than search engines, which may be true.

+ Tip +
=====================

How to unsubscribe from lists at the major list hosts.

I often see examples of people attempting to unsubscribe from the
lists they are on that are doomed to failure. This seems most
prevalent on the lists hosted by the major list hosts.

Quite often the request is sent straight to the list itself. If I
have time I usually send a quick note to the person concerned,
informing them of the unsubscribe address: I know it can be most
frustrating continuing to receive mail you don't want.

But don't think for a minute that I've nothing better to do than
look for unsubscribe addresses for people - far from it! I don't
need to check...

I already know!

It doesn't matter what the list is - if it's on a major host - I
know how to unsubscribe.

How?

Because there is a simple formula common to almost all that
anyone can learn and remember.

My accidental omission of the unsubscribe address at the foot of
the posts sent through the Biz Bits FFA list, brought to my
attention the fact that many in our own family are also unaware
of this formula. That being the case, I thought you might find it
useful if I shared it with you here.

For any of the major host's (Topica, OneList, eGroups, Listbot,
etc.) all you need to do to unsubscribe is send a BLANK email to
the unsubscribe address.

This address is the same as the list address with "-unsubscribe"
placed between the list name and the "+" symbol like this:

listname+listhost.com

becomes

listname-unsubscribe+listhost.com to unsubscribe from the list.

That's ALL there is to it!

(Incidentally, adding "-subscribe" i.e.

listname-subscribe+listhost.com will add you to this list).

Lists hosted on Majordomo servers don't follow this system but
instead use commands like "REMOVE". In my experience these
commands are always placed in the BODY of the mail, not the
subject line. To be sure you can try putting it in both.

Unfortunately, though the command "REMOVE" placed in the message
body is the most common method used by Majordomo servers, it's
not universal and other commands like "UNSUBSCRIBE" or
"unsubscribe listname" are also employed.

If you're unsure try "REMOVE" first. The Server will always reply
to your mail, either telling you that you've successfully
unsubscribed or that it doesn't know what you're talking about!
In the latter case, the reply will usually include both subscribe
and unsubscribe instructions for you to follow.

Putting he word "REMOVE" in the subject line is most commonly
used in connection with auto responders, or by those managing
their own lists, either manually, or semi-automatically through
the use of mail filters.

There are of course numerous other unique systems out there, each
with their own set of rules to follow. Hopefully though, you'll
now find unsubscribing from the majority of lists a little bit
easier.
