Profits? We Don't Need No Stinkin' Profits!

Sometimes it seems net companies are proud that their business
plans predict no profits for years upon years. It's almost
bragging rights. The plan reads, For the first five years we will
invest in building our brand and buying weaker rivals.
Ten years ago the proposal would have been laughed out of a
venture capitalist's office. The capitalists have always loved
aggressive profit chasing, even at the expense of sound
management. But the Internet companies have turned profit
considerations upside-down.
Lately I'm beginning to see their logic. Maybe I'm getting dizzy
with all this e-business, but delayed profits make sense for
Internet companies. Whatever it takes to get established as the
leader in your niche is worth all of the upfront investment you
can grab.
Think of it this way. If you can set up a retail store in the
very first shopping mall and thereby be in every shopping mall
that is ever built again, how much would you be willing to spend
to secure that spot? It's the nature of cyber-business. If you
can establish yourself early, you can dominate your niche.
Part of the magic of the Internet is that you don't need profits
to get rich. Say, you start a company that offers discount prices
on future wine selections from Napa Valley. Your customers
propose to buy 12 cases of Cabernet or Merlot upfront at $8 per
bottle to see which wineries take the offer. Selling future
products is a quick way for wineries to obtain cheap financing,
and it's a way for customers to get very good wine at Paul Masson
prices.
It rings of Internet magic: a new concept for both buyer and
seller. The matchmaking is done online. The customers post their
offers and the wineries page through the standing offers to find
customers willing to pay for wine two or three years before the
it reaches its time. Like a good casino dealer, the site rakes
its share from every transaction.
The website finds early success because it's easy to locate the
vineyards. They're interested because they get no-interest loans
against guaranteed sales with no middle-man. They don't have to
go to their deepest discount to consummate the sale. It's great
for the buyer because he's getting deals that beat anything he
can find in the stores. And he doesn't mind the wait because he's
stocking a cellar, not picking tomorrow night's bottle.
You can find the buyers through space ads in Wine Spectator. You
match the high connoisseurs with the good wineries. Both groups
are easy to find. All you have to do is get the word out to the
markets. They'll trust you, because they are really doing
business with each other, not you. It's beautifully simple. But
here's the best part. You don't need to make a profit in order to
get filthy rich.
You write an horrendously detailed plan for the venture market
and get enough backing to cover site construction and marketing
to wineries and connoisseurs. It won't take much, one or two
million. This is funny money. The ads are cheap, and construction
on the match-maker site is only $500,000. From the get-go you're
pulling a hefty salary to taste wine in Napa Valley.
The fun part comes in 12 to 18 months when you put together your
initial public offering. Your stock hits the market at $20, and
by the end of the day you're at $28. Not bad. But the next few
weeks get woozy. $28 goes to $38 in two weeks. Two months later
you're trading at $76 as you pour over wine cellar blueprints
that go with your new Carmel home. Who cares whose buying wine
from whom. Profits? Amazon can worry about your profits when they
buy you out in a few more months, leaving you with enough return
to spend the rest of your life wandering France in search of even
better wine.

US ONLINE PURCHASES DOUBLE
The number of US adults using credit cards to purchase goods and
services online more than doubled between 1998 and 1999,
according to research by Cyber Dialogue. By the third quarter of
1999, 19.2 million adults used their credit cards to make online
transactions, compared to 9.3 million in 1998 and only 4.9
million in 1997.
The survey also found that Visa is the most common card used by
adults who complete purchase transactions online. Nearly 70
percent of online purchasers who use credit cards online report
using a Visa card, while one-third use MasterCard, 12 percent
American Express, and 6 percent with Discover.
THANKSGIVING A HIT!
US consumers are more receptive than ever to online shopping,
motivated by the convenience, selection, and bargains, and the
Thanksgiving holiday did plenty to prove this, according to
Nielsen//NetRatings' Holiday E-Commerce Index.
According to the index, large increases in visitors to online
shopping sites were recorded over the Thanksgiving holiday, from
Wednesday, Nov. 24, through Sunday, Nov. 28. Toy stores saw an 86
percent increase in traffic during the holiday. Data from Media
Metrix show a 99 percent increase in traffic to toy sites when
compared to Thanksgiving week 1998.

AMAZON.COM, SPRINT OFFER MOBILE SHOPPING
For busy shoppers on the go, online retailer Amazon.com Inc.
Wednesday teamed up with wireless provider Sprint PCS to offer
shoppers connectivity to Amazon.com from Internet-ready Sprint
PCS phones.
The service is part of Amazon.com's (AMZN) "Amazon Anywhere"
strategy to reach customers through a variety of platforms.
With a Sprint PCS (PCS) phone, Amazon.com customers can shop
online by selecting Amazon.com from the phone's MiniBrowser menu.
Registered Amazon.com customers can then purchase any items sold
on Amazon.com's Web site, and new customers can open accounts

I COLLECT PEOPLE. HOW ABOUT YOU?

When I used to be asked if I had a hobby, I would reply, "I
collect people." I didn't know then what it was called, but I do
now. It is called networking and is a method of survival -
economic, social and personal - whereby you gather and use
people, people you know, like, trust and can depend on now, next
year, and the year after that. They can help you achieve your
goals, and their knowledge and resources can make you richer than
money in the bank.
How to Network
--------------
1. Meet as many people as you can. Face-to-face, over the net, on
the telephone. Anywhere, everywhere. All the time.
2. When you make a new contact, tell them what you do. Networking
is low cost advertising.
3. Act like a host, not a guest. Guests wait to be introduced. A
host introduces himself.
4. Don't do business while networking. It is inappropriate and
impractical.
5. You can't always be a seller. Do favours. They are like a
savings account. Someday you may want to draw on it.
6. Keep in touch. This is all important. If you haven't contacted
someone in a while, send an email just to say "hello."
7. Make friends even when you don't need them.
