+ Introduction +
=====================

Hi!

Apologies for being rather late this week. With the holidays and
everything, I got a little behind schedule! Before I forget, I'd
also like to wish you a very happy, prosperous new year! Enjoy
yourself however you choose to celebrate, but watch out for the
'crazies'... there's bound to be quite a few abroad on this new
years eve of the millennium!

Continuing from where I left off last week, I was saying that
ezines offer the best means of promotion online. Apart from the
potential for marketing products in the publication itself,
having your own ezine also provides an excellent vehicle for
driving traffic to your web site.

If you don't already publish one, start your own ezine now. It
doesn't have to be a 'monster' like this . It's quality, not
quantity that matters ... Nor need it be a weekly publication.
You can always start with a monthly schedule until you get the
'feel' for it. If you need some help to get going, there are many
free resources available online to guide you.

In particular I recommend you pay a visit to Ezine University
http://www.EzineUniversity.com . This is a new site from Kate
Schultz of E-ZineZ fame (content and resources for ezine
publishers - I list some of my articles there too - very useful
http://www.e-zinez.com).

I singled out Kate's site because it concentrates solely on
teaching you how to create and promote an ezine. The idea of
Ezine University is to put everything the beginner needs to know
in one place. When you visit, sign up for the free EZU Journal.
Here Kate leads you through her activities week by week as she
increases the number of subscribers to the journal itself (you
see first hand what works and what doesn't), plus plenty of ezine
related 'how-to' advice. If you're in a hurry, get EZU Journal
now with a blank email to: mailto:ezu-subscribe+topica.com

Once you get your ezine going, don't make the mistake of just
sending out the same articles from the same old writers that so
many other ezines are reproducing. Develop interesting content.
Something unique to your publication. Something that makes it
your own. It doesn't matter if you feel you can't write much
yourself. With a little effort you can still find many quality
articles online that haven't received wide publicity.

And don't make the mistake of plastering your ezine with ads! It
may seem like a good idea, after all there are many ezines with
thousands of subscribers that are doing just that. Plus you can
quickly earn a few dollars.

So why do I say it's a mistake?

The #1 reason is the *quality* of the subscriber base you're
going to end up with. You're not going to build loyalty and trust
with an ezine like that. From the outset you show that your
primary concern is earning money from your subscribers, without
regard for the annoyance so many ads often cause.

If your own pocket is so obviously more important to you than
anything else, how can you even hope to be trusted?

And trust is the critical factor in the transition from earning a
few bucks, to being able to sell *quality* products one after
another to a receptive audience of thousands, and generating a
good income for yourself in the process.

I'm not saying avoid ads entirely. With a newsletter the size of
Biz Bits for example, you could certainly include more ads than I
do. Aim for 5 - 15 ads per issue, depending on ezine size. For
the return you'll get when your list is still below the several
thousand mark, I would be more inclined to swap ads rather than
sell space.

The number of subscribers to ad bloated lists can also be
misleading. Many claim to have large subscription numbers but in
reality have a lot of dead email addresses.

With regular low quality content, a large number of subscribers
probably won't even read your ezine, but for one reason or
another may not unsubscribe. Many lists are full of addresses
from free email providers, for example. These accounts will
receive email without bouncing, although the message is never
read.

Other subscribers may just give it a quick scan for anything of
interest before they delete it. If they are particularly busy,
they'll probably delete without even opening it. It's easy for
owners of low-value lists to claim large numbers, but the reality
is that a large portion of their list names will never respond to
an advertisement or promotion because they don't actually read
the publication.

Then of course there is the turnover of subscribers, often
referred to as the 'churn rate' (I think the term was first
coined by John Audette of mmgco.com, and is calculated by
dividing the number of new subscribers by the number of
un-subscribes over a set period).

You want to build a long term relationship with your subscribers.
However, a low quality publication will suffer from a high rate
of unsubscriptions. Though through your marketing efforts your
list may continue to grow, the average subscriber may not have
been receiving your ezine for very long. They won't have had time
to come to trust you.

To sum up, provide a regular quality ezine to build up a quality
subscriber base. Initially, concentrate as much of your energy as
time allows on the building of this list. Don't think too much
about making money, selling ad space and all the rest. Deliver
quality first. Give of yourself. One day - directly or indirectly
- you will receive, and it will be worth a lot more to you than a
few hundred dollars an issue for a few ads!

The search engine WhatsNu.com is accepting web site submissions
with a new twist. WhatsNu.com adds your URL instantly, with sites
organized by date and category. However, the real bonus is what
comes next. Free weekly notifications of new Web site launches
covering 30 specific categories are sent out by WhatsNu.com to
over 30,000 opt-in individuals each week, targeting their
particular interests.

Obviously this gives you the opportunity of reaching more
potential visitors, and what's more, you can submit as many URLs
as you wish. Whilst I recommend you take advantage of the
service, don't submit many URLs at once as I've witnessed some
others doing. You'll get much better coverage if you go back once
a week to submit another page. http://www.whatsnu.com

A little bit concerned, there will be some problems. All we can
hope for is that people do not panic. There have already been a
few glitches in the state offices, and they were suppose to be
ready. Doesn't seem likely if they are already having problems.

9 Key Sources for Building Your Opt-In Lists
--------------------------------------------
by Scott T. Smith, Business Copywriting.Net

It's no secret.

Your opt-in list means everything to your online business.
Building a great email list you can send to again and again is
key to your success. Here are the nine fundamental sources from
which you can build your opt-in email list:

1. Your Current Customers

This is your best source of contacts. The hardest thing for any
business to do is to find new customers. It's expensive, time
consuming, and you have to earn their trust. But - it's easy to
sell again to a satisfied customer. They already know you and
'love' you.

As long as you provide products or services that are of fair
value and high quality, your customers will continue to trust
you and buy from you. In fact, they will prefer to buy from you.
A loyal customer base is your best friend in business.

If your business does not yet have a database of customer email
addresses, here's how to get them:

The next time you contact them by post or mail, make a special
offer if they reply by email. It could be a free report or
special discount. You MUST get their email address.

Remember: there are more of your customers on the Internet than
you think, and the rest of them will be online very soon.

2. Customers For Other Businesses

Joint venture through endorsed mailings. Customers of other
related, non-competing businesses are excellent prospects for
your personalized email offerings. In exchange for a split of
the profits, let the other company send their endorsed emailing
of your offer to their customer list.

Here's a secret: you should be willing to give away a healthy
portion of the profits on the front end, because the buyers will
become customers on your list. Once they are loyal buyers, you
can sell to them again and again on your back end. That's why
joint ventures can be highly profitable for you in the long
term.

3. Your Web Site Visitors

One of the most powerful ways to build a targeted list of
prospects is through forms on your Web site. For a 'how-to' look
at this process, visit the home page
http://www.copywriting.net of Business Copywriting.Net where
you'll find three tactics encouraging people to opt in:

We invite people to subscribe to our free newsletter. We offer a
free, no-obligation copywriting consultation. We invite people
to refer our site to their friends and associates.

There's a lot you can do to get people online to interact with
you:

Offer a free report on autoresponder. Create a newsletter.
Provide free downloads of freeware or shareware programs
appropriate for your audience. And always, always ask for their
name and email address in return.

Give people good reasons to give you their contact information
so you can stay in touch with them, sending them new offers for
your line of products and services.

4. Advertising

In all forms of advertising you do, online and offline, always
give your email address. Encourage people to contact you by
email, because your objective is to funnel prospects and
customers into your email box. You will automatically create a
hot list of prospects whom you can responsibly contact via
email.

Include your email address on business cards, stationary,
invoices, faxes, print, radio and television advertising. Give
customers incentives to email you. This email 'relationship'
empowers you to send them updates and offers by email.

5. Press Releases

Press releases offering genuine news (as opposed to a poorly
disguised sales pitch) are highly effective. Here's how to use
them to build your email list:

Your press releases can offer a free report that people must
email you to receive, or a product that can be emailed back to
them. Write your press release to provoke this response from
readers, and collect their names and email addresses in the
process.

6. Referrals

When a prospect contacts you for a free report, contact them and
offer to send the report to any of their friends they think
might be interested. As you can see, this is similar to an
endorsed mailing.

When a referral comes in, send out a personalized email letter
to the referral explaining that they were referred by their
friend (give the name), and you are sending them a free report
because their friend asked you to. To ensure that they don't
mind you keeping them on your list, end your message with this
paragraph:

"To be sure this message has arrived, please reply with the word
in the subject line: 'thanks'. We'll know that we sent this
report to the right place, and that we've fulfilled our promise
to (friend's name)."

If they do not reply to let you know they received the report,
be safe. Assume they are not interested in hearing from you in
the future, and don't mail to them again.

7. Renting Lists

This can be very expensive, but worth it if the list is highly
targeted. Prices can vary between .05 and .40 per name
depending upon the number you are mailing, how targeted the
list is and how the names have been gathered. Our suggestion is
to test mail to a small list at first and gauge your response,
or use one of the direct email services listed below.

Only get lists from reputable companies online, and be very
careful about this. Never mail to a CD-Rom list of millions of
names. We promise - they don't want to hear from you, you'll get
spam-fried in the process, and many addresses will be defunct.

Direct Email Services

Direct email services will send out your email in bulk to a
targeted, opt-in list. Be sure to confirm that these companies
do indeed mail to lists of individuals who are targeted,
voluntary subscribers. And before you spend a dime, make sure
that these are the people your business most needs to reach.

3W Online

Direct email is sent to 5,000-200,000 Internet users who
subscribe to this service. It is a powerful tool when used in
combination with a Web site, electronic storefront or an
autoresponder.

subscription) email lists.

WebPromote Direct Email
http://www.webpromote.com/de/

YesMail
http://www.yesmail.com

A good, reliable company.

8. Direct Response Mail

Give prospects you mail to by post an extra incentive to respond
by email. Tell them their order will be processed much more
quickly, and offer a bonus if they respond by email.

The goal is to transform your expensive postal mail prospect
list into an inexpensive email list. The more people you can
reach by email, the more you will reduce your costs (and the
higher your profits will climb).

9. Membership Organizations

People working together for a common goal are excellent
prospects for your email list. If you belong to an association,
network, an alumni group, a club, a school board, or other
organization where 'birds of a feather' have flocked together,
offer them a discount for your products and services - and only
allow them to contact you by email.

Publicize this special bonus for members through their
newsletter or other announcement outlets. You're doing their
membership a service, which is certainly newsworthy.

Mining these 9 sources can build your opt-in list in record
time. Start as soon as you can - a good list is worth it's
weight in gold, and is fundamental to your success online.

Resolutions for the New Millennium
By Gary Lockwood

As you launch into this very special new year, consider these
resolutions. Taking action on any of these could transform your
enterprise and your life.

  > Resolve to get wired
Businesses of all shapes and sizes are flocking to the Internet,
the fastest-growing communications medium in history. Use of the
Internet and the World Wide Web can be a cost-effective addition
to your arsenal of competitive weapons. Don't wait. Resolve to
get your enterprise in some form of ecommerce this year.
Companies worldwide are finding out you can reduce marketing
costs, increase revenues and improve service using the Internet.
The world is moving fast. Plug into it today.

   > Resolve to expand your comfort zone
Each of us has our own personal comfort zone. Some would call it
"a rut". Staying in your comfort zone can be very limiting. The
world passes us by as we stagnate. If we are not learning, trying
new things and growing, our jobs and businesses may be
deteriorating. Make a list of 50 things that, if you really were
successful in doing them, you would be a better person or a
better company. Things like give a speech (oh no!), write and
publish an article, start an exercise program, meditate daily,
teach a class, feed a homeless person, volunteer, climb a
mountain, learn to play a new musical instrument, sign up for a
dance class, try for that promotion, and so on.

Then, from your list, choose one or two that you are willing to
do within the next 90 days. Schedule those one or two new
activities, then go for it. Afterward, choose one or two more and
do it again. Make personal and professional growth a lifelong
habit.

   > Resolve to get better clients
Most businesses take on any client who steps up with the money.
Consider the cost to you for dealing with the people you serve.
Have you ever noticed that some people make you feel good just to
be around them? These are the people who give you energy when
they are near you. On the other hand, there are probably others
you can think of who drain all the life out of you. Which clients
would you rather have? You can surround yourself with people who
are pleasant, easy to deal with, interesting and, oh yes,
profitable. Get better clients. You deserve it.

  > Resolve to get organized
Too much going on?.... Not enough time?.... Sound familiar? How
would you like to have more time for what YOU want to do? Resolve
this year to plan your days, reduce interruptions, clean off your
desk, say "No", make lists. The benefits of getting more
organized include being more effective at your work, having more
positive control of your workstyle, saving time and money,
improving your professional image with clients, bosses, etc. and
taking control the stress.

   > Resolve to be a rainmaker
I've seen many people who sat around waiting for rain. They would
wait by the phone, hoping a prospective client would call or come
to the business. Others, including some of the most successful,
took positive action to "make it rain". These are the ones who
made calls, ran ads, got out of the office to make their own
contacts. Through their activity, these business professionals
created opportunities for new business. More clients, more
revenue, better client relationships and happier employees are
just a few of the advantages you'll realize when you take
business-building action for your enterprise.

   > Resolve to cleanup loose ends
We all have messes in our lives. Messes are incomplete tasks,
disorder, disarray, or conflicts that distract you and cause you
to lose energy, break your concentration and reduce self-esteem.
Messes can include cluttered desks, relationships gone awry,
physical well-being, finances, incomplete agreements and legal
issues. Every time you eliminate a loose end, you boost your
confidence, increase concentration, and feel a surge in energy.
For the year 2000, target a mess a month.

   > Resolve to focus on your strengths
Conventional wisdom says we should work on improving our
weaknesses. What a terrible waste of time, talent and
opportunity! Highly successful entrepreneurs, as well as top
scientists, artists, athletes and entertainers throughout history
have achieved great- ness by focusing on their areas of strength.
Everybody has a natural aptitude in some areas. No matter how
hard you try, it is unlikely you will ever be more than average
in areas where you do not have an aptitude.

Working on your weaknesses undermines your self-esteem since you
will focus mostly on your deficiencies. Developing your natural
talents is rewarding and motivating, allowing you to continually
realize higher and higher levels of ability, achievement and
success. This year, experience the immense satisfaction that
comes with being superb at something.

   > Resolve to take more free time
Free time isn't a reward for working hard; it's necessary for
optimum performance and productivity. We need free time, away
from the business, to rejuvenate ourselves. When you are
aggressive about getting rest and relaxation, regularly and
frequently, you'll see increased creativity and productivity.
The more free time you take, the more creativity and productivity
you will experience. To make breakthroughs in income,
productivity and creativity, significantly increase the amount of
free time away from your business.

   > Resolve to develop stronger business relationships
Your economic future is dependent on other people's future. Your
success in your enterprise is based on the extent that you help
other people to succeed in their lives. Ask every person you
encounter what he or she wants to have accomplished three years
from now. Focus on finding ways to help others in achieving
their goals. By adding value to their preferred future, you not
only deepen your relationship; you also create huge opportunities
for yourself.

   > Resolve to get in better shape
Take a hike. Or a jog, swim, or bike ride. With few exceptions,
those who are consistently successful have lots of energy. They
have the stamina and the energy to be creative, to tirelessly
serve their clients, to put in the extra effort when necessary
and to go the extra mile for their employees. The bottom line is
that regular, strenuous exercise is good for business, because
it's good for you. You can increase your well-being, jump-start
your days, boost your confidence, turbocharge your creativity,
and knock down stress by exercising consistently.

And that's not all. Think of exercise as your gift to yourself
and to your loved ones. A gift of longer life, more energy,
happier disposition, increased creativity and reduced pain. You
can increase your well-being, jump-start your days, boost your
confidence, turbocharge your creativity, and knock down stress by
exercising consistently.

Start by exercising your free will. Commit to any of these ten
new-millennium resolutions and make this a great 2000!
