+ Introduction +
=====================

Hi!

You wouldn't believe it, but I was halfway through this issue
when - "clunk" - *another* power cut! Four hours wasted. I hope
this isn't going to become a regular occurrence every Wednesday!

It was my birthday yesterday. The inevitable reflections on the
passage of time that this occasioned led me on to another train
of thought:

Imagine what the Internet will be like 10 years from now...

... can't?

No, neither can I. One thing is certain; it will be very
different to the Internet we know today. I guess by then TV's,
HiFi's, telephones and home computers will be almost obsolete.
They'll have merged into a single web-savvy entertainment and
communications center.

What will we be doing - you and I - the lucky ones in at the
start and a part of this electronic revolution? I think the
answer to that question lies very much in the present, and
largely in our own hands.

Right now we have a window of opportunity in which to establish
online businesses able to generate the kind of revenues that will
be required to keep pace with the rapid advances of technology.

In a few years from now that window will close. I think it will
simply become too expensive for the majority of 'small timers' to
establish a serious online presence. For example, have you ever
contemplated how sophisticated the humble web site is likely to
become (especially with increases in speed and bandwidth)? Can
you imagine constructing such a wonder on your own?

Already the big players are pulling away from the rest of the
pack, pouring cash into ever more sophisticated technology and
complex data-base driven systems. Most successful smaller
businesses are heading in the same direction. This stuff costs
money. Lots of it. Soon todays basic 'do-it-yourself' Frontpage
web site will be an antique. A relic from an earlier time.

We can expect the day to dawn when all but the most basic 'My
Homepage' sites will require the services of web
designers/programmers (the distinction between these roles will
probably blur) and expensive software components. They will also
require the allocation of considerable funds for promotion
purposes (average online marketing/promotion budgets are
increasing rapidly every year).

Can you afford that?

Probably not. Not now at least. However, establishing a solid
online presence today should see you well placed when the time
comes.

Still, they'll always be good ol' email... right?

Don't bank on it! Or rather don't expect the basic text
implementation of today to be as popular in the future. Most of
us love email because it's an immediate, cheap and easy means of
communication. HTML email is growing in popularity, but won't
displace the top position of plain text (ASCII) email until it
and the system itself, make it as easy on the recipient as plain
text messages. It will. In fact it (or it's successor) will
probably surpass it for most users and be far more interactive.

Expect emails to talk to you (if you have a Mac they already can
by reading the text aloud, but I mean something more than this),
and you to talk to them. Voice mail will improve and we may see
the development of a voice/email hybrid. Typing will become the
'old fashioned way' and no longer required (not essential now but
the technology still needs perfecting). Perhaps some form of
video format will be employed too. As with everything at the
cutting edge of technology, it will be those with money to spend
that will be able to fully utilize it to their advantage.

I'm not suggesting that everything will suddenly change in the
next few years. What I am saying is that if you want to stand a
fighting chance of being around for the long haul, you need to
start positioning yourself now. The more people that come online
and the greater the sophistication of the medium, the harder it
will be to get a piece of the pie without spending big time.
Unless you have that sort of cash to hand, you'll need to have
already built up a successful e-business ready to supply those
funds, or risk disappearing into obscurity.

Voter Feedback:

YES!

Definitely the e-mail address should be displayed, unless the
moderator believes that doing so would create a problem. Also, in
discussion lists that I own I usually require that the subscriber
use his/her real, full name. These are lists for industry members
who should have no problem presenting themselves in a
professional manner, right down to using their name instead of
<"Booger" booger+yahoo.com (no slight to Yahoo! intended).

[Azam: Personally I don't understand the logic of the "Booger"
type. I'm sure I'm not alone when say that I'm very unlikely to
deal professionally with them. How can I take seriously a person
that uses such a name in place of their own? Take my advice on
this one - it's OK for fun, *not* for business!]

How To Redesign Your Web Site 400% Faster!
------------------------------------------
by Curtis Stevens

I have been building web sites for years and within the last
year, I found a few tricks that save me a ton of hours in
redesigning my web site. It took me forever to update or change
my entire 30 page site. If I left some information out,
misspelled a url or anything, I would have to do it all over
again and it was very frustrating. But now, I can change my
entire web site in a fraction of the time it original took me!

There are a few ways you can save time on building a web site.
The two newest methods are ASP and PHP. ASP is a kind of
programming that runs on NT servers. PHP is a kind of
programming that runs on UNIX servers. Many people will tell you
it takes a long time to learn it, but once you do, the updating
part is easy to do, in most areas. These two programs are like
HTML, but more difficult. If you do not have the determination
or desire to learn another program, then I suggest trying this
new trick I have found. For most people, I recommend doing this
instead.

- The Old Way -

This is the procedure I took when I built my web site the old
fashion way.

This is what I had to do for EVERY single web page:

1. Visit the page I wanted to change.

2. Right mouse click and view the page source.

3. Change the text and coding.

4. Click on Save as and find the folder I wanted to save it
under. Since Windows uses it's own folder as the default,
I had to change folders to get to the main C directory.
I had created a special folder for my web site pages.
I suggest you do the same.

5. Save the file.

6. Open my uploading tool and transfer the new web page onto my
   server.

Doing this for every single page is very time consuming and after
a while, I stopped updating my site so often. The time and
patience it required, was overwhelming. But now, I have found a
solution to accomplish my job in a small fraction of the time.

The tricks explained below are ones I have found on my own and to
my knowledge, not many people know about them, if any at all.

- The NEW Faster Way -

First, I open my uploading tool I use to upload to my web hosting
server. I use WS_FTP LE. You can get their free or paid version
online. The free version handles all my needs and the majority of
others. There are tons of free uploading tools you can get over
the Internet. If you do not have one, then you can look here:
http://tucows-m1.aust.tx.verio.net/ftp95.html for a variety of
uploading programs. I have included example images throughout
the article to show exactly what I am talking about, each step of
the way. To my knowledge, most uploading tools work very similar
and you should not have a problem understanding this with another
program. If you do, then I suggest downloading the small WS_FTP
file, so you can follow my foot steps (available at the above web
site).

Next, you need to connect to your server. Then open the folder
where all your web pages are stored on in the uploading tool
program. If you do not have them stored on your computer,
transfer all your files from your site's server onto a folder on
your computer. I suggest creating a new one and you will see why
later on. Example Picture:
http://www.imsnewsletter.com/design/1.gif

Once you connect to your server, you need to click on your home
directory folder. Most providers call it www. If you do not
know what it is, then ask your web hosting provider. Example
Picture: http://www.imsnewsletter.com/design/2.gif

This trick will really amaze you! Click on one of your web pages
and then scroll down and highlight every one of them. DO NOT
unclick until you have highlighted every page. Then click on the
"View" button on the program. Now, all of your pages are already
opened in separate note pads. This is why I suggest you creating
a special folder, it makes this much easier. Example Picture:
http://www.imsnewsletter.com/design/3.gif

Now you can change the text and coding on all your web pages. If
you have something you want to change on every page that is
exactly the same, you can use this tool that will replace the
text or coding you want on every page for you, within seconds.
The tool is available online for free here:
http://www.fluid3d.com/software/wineasy.html

Here is another trick I really love. Once you have completed the
changes on ALL your web pages, right mouse click on all the text
pads on the task bar and click on Close (One at a time). A box
will come up and ask you to save the file, hit the "Enter" key.
A little practice and you can easily save 30 pages in about a 30
seconds flat! This way, you do not have to manually save each
page. Example Pictures:

Step One: http://www.imsnewsletter.com/design/4.gif
Step Two: http://www.imsnewsletter.com/design/5.gif

Now, you can transfer all your html files all at once, or only a
few. Click on the "Refresh" button. Then click on one of your
web pages and drag your mouse over all the pages you want to
transfer, like earlier showed. Now click on the transfer icon.
Example Picture: http://www.imsnewsletter.com/design/6.gif

Once you try changing a few pages, you can see how this will save
you hundreds of hours, and can easily update your site within no
time flat!

Going this route is also very helpful if you are using the
statistics tracking program AXS found here:
http://www.xav.com/scripts/axs If you visit each web page, it
hides the coding, which tracks your web site. That means you have
to enter the code back into each web page all over

again. By going through the uploading program, it stays there,
so you do not have to reenter the code on every web page again.
If you use another program and are not happy, I recommend that
you check this CGI script out. It's free and a very awesome
tool!

HOW MUCH BUSINESS ARE YOU GETTING
FROM YOUR NATURAL MARKET?
Copyright 1999 By Bob Leduc

I have a friend who is one of the top sales producers with a
large life insurance company. Tony was born in Italy and
grew up near Naples. He moved to the US about 15 years ago.
He was immediately hired by his present company because he
had prior experience selling insurance to US military
personnel in Italy.

Tony soon discovered that a large number of Italian
restaurant owners in the US city where he now lived were
from a small village outside of Naples. Not only did they
speak Italian, they spoke his dialect. It wasn't long before
Tony was getting most of his business from these Italian
restaurant owners. Nobody else can duplicate the 'natural'
relationship he has with them. It's the primary reason why
Tony became one of the top producers in his company.

Tony's relationship with his clients illustrates the
powerful advantage of capitalizing on a 'natural market'.

WHAT IS A NATURAL MARKET?

A natural market is the portion of your target market that
shares a unique personal characteristic with you. It
automatically creates a relationship between you and a
prospect in your target market for a PERSONAL reason. For
example:

Let's say you're a teacher or have been a teacher in the
past. You're also a distributor for an MLM company selling
healthcare products. You define your target market as people
interested in preserving or improving their health and who
are also interested in a business opportunity. Some of those
prospects have the ADDITIONAL CHARACTERISTIC of being
teachers or former teachers, just like you. That's a natural
market for you. You can communicate with them on a special
personal basis.

BENEFITS OF A NATURAL MARKET

Potential customers are more receptive when they share a
common background or a special interest with you. It's human
nature to feel secure when doing business with someone we
believe is just like us. This is especially helpful for
promoting business on the Internet because prospects can't
see or hear you 'live'.

HOW TO FIND YOUR BEST NATURAL MARKET

Start by making a list of different things you've done in
your life. For example:

* What professions or occupations are you engaged in (now or
 previously)?
* What hobbies or crafts do you actively participate in?
* What special interest clubs or associations are you
 actively involved with?
* Do you have a unique national origin or speak a foreign
 language (like my friend, Tony)?
* What unique special background or special experiences do
 you have?

Each item on your list may represent a natural market you
can use. However, some will have more impact than others.
The greater the uniqueness of the common characteristic, the
more leverage it provides. Select the one with the most
unique characteristic to use first.

Your natural market is a more focused definition of your
primary target market. Once you identify a natural market,
start using it in your advertising. Revise your present
sales material to create special sales material specifically
appealing to your natural market. Use the same marketing
tactics you've been using but expand them to include this
new segment of your target market. You'll unlock a
completely new layer of business hidden in your existing
target market.
