+   Introduction    +
=====================

Hi,

How quickly Wednesday comes around again! I'm just back from a
quick trip to Singapore. Whilst there my wife and I decided to
take a break from the car by spending a short while relaxing at
pleasant little park with a lake.

Suddenly, as lunchtime came around, groups of monkeys started to
appear everywhere. Nothing unusual about seeing monkeys as
they're common in this part of the world. What was so remarkable
was their timing, considering that because it was a public
holiday, the park was almost empty.

They came right up to us and the few other people around and
where obviously looking to see if we had any food. Then it struck
me, "Wow... these guys can tell the time! They've learnt to come
down from the trees when people should be coming on their lunch
break, saving their energy for the time when they can expect the
richest pickings."

Smart or what? Even the monkeys know the value of good
positioning and effective targeting! Don't waste your energy
trying to be everywhere all the time, on the chance of picking up
on anything that may come your way. Plan. Save your efforts for
those activities that bring you the biggest return on your work
(or money).

                              <>

NEW COMPETITION! Win the sponsors ad position at the top of Biz
Bits by referring new subscribers! Whoever refers the most new
subscribers over the next month, between now and October 1st,
will win the coveted spot for 2 WEEKS! This is the one ad that
EVERYONE sees, so make the best of this targeted opportunity.

Ask the people you introduce to send a blank email to the
following address (you need to replace the part after 'subject='
with YOUR email address):

mailto:subscribeBB+nowsell.com?subject=YourEmailAddressHere

That's to subscribeBB+nowsell.com with YOUR email address as the
SUBJECT of the message (the same address you use to receive Biz
Bits). Do NOT use the usual BizBits@NowSell.com.

You may also use this address if you place your own ads as a way
of introducing new subscribers (you can get loads this way!).
Closing date for entries is the 1st of Oct. The winner will be
notified personally as well as being announced here.

                              <>

Hopefully, today I will find the time to get out some
announcements for the FFA list. Be prepared for more activity and
lots of new prospects for your messages. If you can make some new
friends (and some new converts to Biz Bits?), even better! As I
said last week, the list will be open to non-subscribers to Biz
Bits for around 14 days.
                              <>

Last, but by no means least, in an effort to get more people to
register their votes in our weekly poll, I've decided to
experiment with a change of layout. From this week you'll find
the Voting Booth has moved up from the bottom to just below this
Introduction.
                              <>

I always love to hear your thoughts, so send your feedback,
comments, etc., to me at: mailto:azam+nowsell.com

+    Voting Booth   +
=====================

This is the place where we take a quick poll for a snapshot of
the Biz Bits family's opinions on a given topic.

This week:

Do you think good search engine ranking is crucial to your
business?

YES! >>>>   mailto:yes+nowsell.com

Without it you can't get the traffic you need to succeed!

NO!  >>>>   mailto:no+nowsell.com

There are many other ways to drive quality, targeted traffic to a
web site!

ERR? >>>>   mailto:err+nowsell.com

I'm not sure... depends... what do you mean by 'traffic'?

*** Add any additional comments in the body of your vote mail ***

=====================
Last week:

Do you think MLM is a good way to make money online?

YES! >>>>   50%

It's a great, fast and easy way to make money!

NO!  >>>>   50%

Most MLM opportunities are scams or need you to buy things all
the time for you to get any income!

ERR? >>>>   0%

I'm not sure... depends... what's MLM?

Seems you're split right down the middle! (A sure sign we need
more votes!)

Readers Feedback:

"Biz Bits is fresh, imaginatively written, and a valued addition
to my inbox. Refreshingly different from so many Internet
business titles, jam-packed with adverts broken-up by duplicated
or plaigarised articles. Biz Bits' style and content are to be
treasured. Truly a bright star in a field of mediocrity."

David Deeson, business-to-business consultant, and founding
editor, Home Business.

"In the past month of trying to "learn" how to do this stuff,
I've subscribed to--dozens??--hundreds??--of lists...Biz Bits
--I'm not lyin'!--is one of the few I actually read--sit and
read--without skimming and deleting."

Paula Bright, teacher.

Site Graphics and other Jazzy bits
----------------------------------
by Azam Corry

"What's the number 1 reason why people leave web sites?"

Do you know? Not sure?

OK then, here it is... load time!

Did you get that? Let me repeat it again... load time!

In fact I'd better shout it out in case you didn't hear me
clearly ... LOAD TIME!!

"Eh?", you're thinking "What's this guy on about, I've got a
great site, nice layout, well written, interesting... they'll
wait for my page to load!" They might...

...if they've been there before.

But what about all those first time visitors? Unless they're
pretty certain that it's going to be worth the wait...

...bye-bye!

They've gone! So has the marketing time, effort and cost it took
for you to get them there! It doesn't matter how good your site
is, if you make a new visitor wait too long, chances are they
won't.

They'll never see all your hard work... what a waste!

Speedfreaks
~~~~~~~~~~~
The very nature of the Internet adds a sense of urgency to the
online experience of most users. The majority of people online
are fairly new to the net. They are overwhelmed by this exciting
new world they've discovered.
There's so much to see and so little time in which to see it. The
cost of time online contributes to these feelings. This is
especially true for those who live outside the US, where ISP
charges and call rates can be substantially higher.
I usually have two or three browser windows open at a time, so I
always have a fresh page to look at whilst others are loading. If
you get a visitor like me the load time won't matter. But like
many that make their living online, perhaps yourself included, I
am fortunate to have the luxury of a large monitor, most surfers
don't. Also, in my experience, few surfers are comfortable
jumping between windows in that way. Think about the average
user's experience and not your own.
Always keep in mind...
On the net people want it fast, FAST, FASTER!
Everything on your web page adds to it's download time.
*Everything*. Remember that!
By far the greediest of the byte gobbler's are audio, graphics
(especially if animated) and Java applets.
So ask yourself...
"Do I really need that welcome voice message?" Or the fancy Java,
or the cool graphics? In fact - excuse me - I'm going to butt in
here and tell it to you straight...
...no, you don't!
Not unless you happen to be selling something inextricably linked
to one of these items. This might be the case with graphics for a
graphic design web site, for example. But even then, my advice...
keep it to the bare minimum on your home page.
Get them in the front door first...
...once they're safely inside, then you can show them how
beautifully you've decorated your house!
For the graphics you have to have (and we all need some), make
sure the file sizes are as small as possible by compressing them
to the point that any further reduction would result in
distortion. If you don't know anything about this, don't worry.
There are a few online services that can do this for you.
Alternatively you can buy a software application to help you with
this task. The excellent Adobe Image Ready (you can download both
a Mac or PC version) will automatically do this and several other
things (like making animated banners) for the graphics you use
online.
This latter option may work out cheaper for you in the long term
and saves a lot of time, but as always, decide what would be the
best for you in your situation.
Cut it out!
~~~~~~~~~~~

Don't put anything on your home page that doesn't have an
important reason for being there. You're reading this because you
want to make money online, right? So just take a minute (later...
not now!) to examine the elements that make up your page and ask
yourself for each "Will this help me to make money?" If the
answer is "No", then bin it.

Be merciless!

Only give space to things that will increase your bottom line.
Bear in mind however that some items can add to your site's
success and profitability in indirect ways, depending on your
business. For example, a chat room could be used as a means of
allowing visitors to interact directly with your staff. This may
be with sales or customer support personnel depending on your
product and focus.

Personally I don't subscribe to the generally held view that
visitors don't like to scroll the page and so it must kept short.
In fact, I'm inclined to believe...

...it's a load of rubbish!

People use scroll bars in their word processors and Email
programs every day. And I don't care what anyone says - if you
find the content sufficiently interesting...

...you'll keep on scrollin' down that page!

I hate sites that spread information over many short pages! I
feel like I'm constantly waiting for pages to load. I feel that
the site owner is inconsiderate, or trying to get extra banner
impressions on my time. I often get fed up and leave.

But - and this is a big but - your homepage is different.

It must load quickly and everything on it adds to it's download
time, remember?

For this reason don't make your home page too long. I recommend
you stick to between one and one-and-a half screen lengths unless
the page is almost entirely text, in which case you can safely
increase on this.

A) [New Topic] Multi Level Marketing (MLM)
               - Deborah Colvais
                 - Azam's Comment

Note: This was originally Deborah's response to last weeks poll.
     Because of it's length and content I decided to include it
     here as a post instead.

From: "Deborah Colvais" open24and7+hotmail.com
To: yes+nowsell.com
Subject: MLM
Date: Fri, 27 Aug 1999 13:02:14 EDT

This industry has the good, the bad, and the ugly just like any
other. Because of comparatively low start-up costs, you have a
lot of people joining without doing their research and getting
burned. You also have a lot of people, especially online, who
join so many companies that they can't possibly work any of them
effectively and, therefore, fail at all of them.

This is my take - You can make money in network marketing if:

(1)The product or service is a good value and can be sold on its
own merits to non-MLMers. An easy way to find out is to show the
company brochure to a few friends before joining and see what
their reaction is. If you're too shy to do this, do you really
belong in a sales career?

(2)The pay structure is heavily weighted toward the first 3
levels of your downline. This is the average downline size
across the entire industry and allows part-timers to make money.

(3)The company itself has been around at least 5 years in its
current structure and is on solid financial ground. Also, be
sure to check with the BBB regarding the company's complaint
record.

(4)The downline you're considering joining under is making money
and is willing to take the time to teach you how to do the same.

I hope this helps those who are considering MLM think about the
pros and cons of the various companies out there. I would
encourage you to do your research up front, pick a company, and
devote yourself to working that business.

You will receive new offers every other day once you put your
name out there as being interested in the business. Ignore them.
You will be most successful by choosing a good company upfront
and sticking with them.

Best of luck to you all.

Sincerely,
Deborah Colvais

Sounds like reasonable advice to me. Not having much experience
in this field, it would be unfair of me, in my capacity as
editor, to comment further. But YOU can freely submit your views
regarding MLM by sending in a post telling of your experiences or
opinions.

+        Tip        +
=====================

This week I want to tell you about another handy tool you
probably haven't heard about before: Bookmarklets.

These are simple java tools that add useful functions to both
Netscape and Explorer browsers. They are stored together with
your regular bookmarks/favorites and their functions called up by
selecting them in exactly the same way.

There are over 150 bookmarklets available and they're all free.

These handy little scripts allow you to do a wide variety of
tasks - some of which can be extremely useful - quickly and
painlessly. They work on all platforms and you don't have to
download or install any special software to use them.

Here are just some of the bookmarklets and the tasks they
perform:

* Length of String...
Gives the number of characters in a pasted text string (up to
255). Handy when filling in online forms.

* Number of Words in Selection
Select some text on a web page. The bookmarklet counts the number
of words in the selected text.

* List All Links
Creates a new page with just the URLs that appear in the page you
are viewing, which you can then save if you wish.

* Make Page with Selection
Select any text on a page and call up this bookmarklet to create
a new page which just contains the selected text without
formatting.

* Previous Page in New Window
If you want to back up just for a moment (to check something on a
previous page) it can be faster to use this bookmarklet to open
the previous page in a new window (so you don't have to reload
the current page).

* Add Domain to Favorites
Sometimes you don't know that you want to bookmark a site until
you've already gone several pages into it, but you would still
rather bookmark the homepage. This bookmarklet allows you to add
the current domain to your bookmarks/favorites (instead of the
current page).

* Highlight Links
Puts a yellow background highlight behind each link making the
links on a page stand out.

* Scroll Page... (variable)
Enables you to make a page scroll automatically. You can set the
rate of scroll to a number between 1 and 8.

* Statusbar Shows True URL
Some sites use JavaScript to overwrite the true destination of an
URL that normally appears in the statusbar at the bottom of your
browser window. This bookmarklet reveals the true destination.

* Page Freshness
When you're surfing and you want to know how old a page is,
select this bookmarklet to see the date of last modification.

There are also several search specific bookmarklets, one of
which, when called, will feed any selected text on the page
straight into a search engine. This as you can imagine, is much
faster than copying the text, loading the SE's page and then
pasting it in to do your search. If you don't select any text,
this will bring up a search box for you to directly type in your
enquiry.

You can learn about all the bookmarklets and get as many as you
want from: http://www.bookmarklets.com/
