Unless you publish in full-blown HTML, your ezine must be 100% plain text for complete compatibility with the various kinds of email readers subscribers use.
By "Plain Text" I mean text based on the ASCII standard (American Standard Code for Information Interchange). This is NOT the same as text created by Word or other word processing programs. ASCII uses universally recognized set of digital codes to represent each of the letters, punctuation marks, and other symbols you can type on your computer.
Using ASCII text is the only way to guarantee your ezine appears as intended. Anything else will result in formatting errors and incorrectly printing characters (seen as ugly bits of code) in many email clients.
The easiest way to avoid problems is by using a dedicated text editor. Otherwise Notepad is ideal. If you must use a word processor like MS Word (I strongly suggest you don't), save your article as plain text before copying to your email program. Alternatively, paste it into Notepad, save it and then copy from there. Set your email program to send in Plain Text format only; not Rich Text or HTML.
Limit each line of text to 65 characters or less (including spaces). Some email software can't display anything wider, forcing extra text to "break" onto the line below.
These short lines create an unsightly jagged effect like
this,
which makes reading difficult and gives you an
unprofessional
image.
In addition, the longer the line, the harder work reading becomes. On reaching the end of a long line of text, it's difficult for the eye to locate the start of the next.
If you have a text editor, simply select the Hard Wrap function, and set it to 60 or 65 characters (a small number of email programs break lines at 60 characters). Otherwise you will have to manually insert a line break as you type, by pressing the Enter key.
Copy the line below, and paste it at the top of your page as a guide.
