For most publishers ezines are essentially a medium for advertising in some form or other – but it has to done right. If your publication is nothing more than a blatant ad for your business, you'll get nothing but unsubscriptions.
Yes, I know that the sole reason for the existence of most ezines is to promote the publisher's business. However, you have to build loyalty and trust by providing useful information first.
Nobody signs up for an ezine to be "sold" anything. Promote your business of course, but do it in the context of providing valuable content. Create a quality ezine and you'll build a quality subscriber list.
Similarly, don't plaster your ezine with third party ads just to earn a few dollars. Selling advertising space can be a valuable source of income for many publishers, but don't overdo it. Subscribers generally don't like a lot of ads, and they certainly don't have much time for ezines that are more ads than real content.
In addition, the more ads you run in a single issue, the lower the response rate to each ad will be. Each ad is effectively competing with the others for attention. At first you might think you're making more money by selling more ad space. However, poor response rates will lose you valuable repeat business from advertisers. And repeat business is much easier to find than new advertisers.
Develop interesting content. Something unique to your publication. Something that makes it your own. Even if you feel you can't write much yourself, with a little effort you can still find many quality articles online that haven't received wide publicity.
Once you have a large number of subscribers, you will find there are writers willing to supply free articles to be published exclusively in your ezine, or at least several weeks prior to appearing anywhere else.
Unless you're prepared to work at it, your ezine will be identical to hundreds of others. And if that's the case, you'll never be able build the number of subscribers to any appreciable size. You will only be wasting your time.
