Hi,

I'm leaving for a short trip to Singapore later today and so
won't have time to start the planned 'tips' section, "TIPS BITS,"
until next week. If you missed the last issue (shame on you ;-),
or if you are a new subscriber (welcome!), this new section will
also be open to reader contributions and aims to provide
information that will make your life online just that bit easier,
or more productive.

Topics covered can be anything from marketing strategies to
common writing errors, HTML tips to web site promotion. Though I
am quite happy to provide the content myself, exchanging ideas
from many sources is even better. I know many of you have tips
that would benefit other readers (I can think of a lot of
names!), so why haven't I heard from YOU? ;-)

Don't worry, your tips needn't be long. Just enough to make your
point. I will compile tips as necessary to keep the section a
similar length every week. And don't forget you get free
promotion for your effort. Do a bit of brainstorming, and send
your tips, together with a 3 line signature file to:

The keyword density of a web page is a measure of how often a
particular keyword occurs within it, usually expressed as a
percentage of the total page content. It is one of the most
important factors in determining the position at which a search
engine ranks a page for various keywords. If your keyword density
is way off from what the search engine is looking for, you stand
almost no chance of gaining a top spot, no matter what else may
be in your favour. To low and your page isn't considered relevant
enough. To high and the engine assumes you are stuffing your page
with keywords just to increase your rank, and so knocks points
off.

As a Mac user, I've long searched in vain for a keyword density
analyzer to assist me in preparing web pages for search engine
consumption. There are of course several online services
purporting to perform the same function. However, their
usefulness is rather limited. I find the lack of detail in their
analysis makes them of no help at all in designing pages that
rank well in the search engines.

Recently, I discovered http://keyworddensity.com/, home to a
keyword density analyzer that leaves other online services in the
shade. It's fast, free and, well ... fantastic! The details and
options available had me squirming in my seat with delight. At
last I could compare my own pages with those that rank well in
the search engines!

At Keyworddensity.com, you aren't simply told the total number of
occurrences of your chosen keyword in the entire page, or the
overall keyword density. Tabulated results provide a comparison
analysis between your page and any other, telling you the total
number of words, the number of occurrences of your keyword and
the keyword density as a percentage for each of the following:

* Title
* Meta Description
* Meta Keywords
* Visible Text
* Alt Tags
* Comment Tags
* Domain Name
* Image tags
* Linked Text
* Option Tags
* Reference Tags
* Page Total

To give you an idea of the power of this tool, I should mention
that Gabriel Zappia, president of Internet Marketing for Internet
Business, Inc., owners of Keyworddensity.com, told me that that
though originally built by one of his programmers, the analyzer
is now used extensively by his own webmaster!

And there's more ...

You can also opt to customize your analysis to suit your own
requirements. The variables you can adjust are too many to list
here, but include such things as whether a particular type of tag
should be included or ignored (for instance, you might want to
exclude the contents of comment tags), how a hyphen should be
read (e.g. you might want it to be read as a space), and the word
or character limit for the analysis of various meta tags.

What's so important about that?

Well, the point about this is that it enables you modify the
analysis to suit the algorithms of specific search engines. Every
search engine differs in the way it reads the pages it spiders.
For example, most engines index the content of meta keyword tags.
However, some, like Excite, Lycos, Google and Northern Light
don't. If you are working on improving a page for either of
these, you won't want to include the meta keyword tag in your
keyword density analysis.

In addition, the search engines that do index the keyword tag
each have their own limits on the number of keywords, or more
usually, the amount of text they read. The same is also true for
the other meta tags. Obviously the greater the amount of text
analyzed the more times a keyword will need to occur to attain a
particular keyword density. Comparing like for like will give you
more accurate results.

Gabriel, who is a search engine specialist, gave me some
additional tips about "search engine profiling" or SEP, that I
would like to share with you. According to Gabriel, SEP is
basically "how to know what the search engines like in these days
of cloaked pages."

In case you're not sure about what is meant by "cloaked pages,"
they are web pages that use a script to serve a specially
optimized page to the search engine spider, and redirect the
ordinary surfer to a regular page designed purely for viewing.
The script does this by comparing the domain address the page is
being accessed from, with those of the various search engine
spiders. Obviously, when you try and analyze a page from a site
employing cloaking, the results you get will be meaningless.

Why?

Because the page you're analyzing is not the same as the one the
search engines see.

According to Gabriel, the SEP process is simple:

1. Choose a topic which has no commercial value but which also
   has lots of pages about it. "clog dancing" for example.

2. Do a search on this topic.

3. Compare the top listed results with each other, looking for
   commonalities.

"Look for total word depth, keyword density, etc. You could also
look at 'density of first x characters' and other more specific
items. Since the topic has no commercial value you can bet that
the pages are not cloaked. Therefore you are seeing the
'natural' ranking algorithm of the search engine on a large
number of uncloaked pages.

After identifying common features of the top results, you can now
safely assume that these features are important to have on your
pages."

Thanks to Gabriel for his tips and for an excellent free tool. I
recommend you pay a visit to http://keyworddensity.com/ right
away. You'll find it invaluable!
