Hello,
If you publish an ezine or newsletter, you'll probably be
interested to know that the Cumuli Ezine Finder service has
recently undergone some major changes, and is now free.
Cumuli recruits subscribers for the publications listed in it's
database. I first registered Biz Bits with Cumuli early last
September. At that time, Cumuli was charging 10c per subscriber,
but gave you 25 free credits to start with. You also gained one
credit for every two people that subscribed to other ezines
through your referral link.
Suddenly, in December, Cumuli decided to change their billing
structure from a per subscriber charge, to a yearly fee of $100
to be listed in the directory. Over the previous three months I
had only received a handful of new subscribers, not even using up
my free credits. I put it down to the newness of the service, and
wasn't concerned because it didn't cost me.
Paying $100 up-front was an entirely different proposition
however, and I simply ignored the invoice they sent me in
January. To be fair, the $100 could be substantially reduced by
advertising Cumuli.
Running two ads in the top 70% of your newsletter over the course
of the year saved you $20, whilst either putting an ad for Cumuli
in your subscription autoresponder, or including their linked
logo on your site chopped off another $50. Do both, and your
yearly fee would be reduced to $30.
I presumed my listing to be deleted, until an unexpected email
informed me that it was only deactivated, and announced the
changes.
This is what Cumuli had to say:
1. Listings are now free. We require only that you mention the
Cumuli Ezine Finder every three months in your Ezine in order for
your listing to remain active.
2. Subscribers can now be sent directly to your automatic
subscribe addresses.
3. New subscribers will be sent within minutes of their
subscription. No waiting for your subscriber list to come each
week.
4. The Cumuli Ezine Finder now verifies every subscriber's email
address. All visitors must pass our email verification system
before they can search in the directory.
5. All searches and categories are now sorted by your list
rating. The highest rated ezines are listed on top. Your ezine
must have more than 10 votes for your rating to count.
6. Top 50 Ezine list. If you are among the top rated 50 ezines
you will be included in this list.
7. You can now make changes to your listing live 24 hours a day.
We have enhanced the usability and appearance of the account
interface.
8. The advertising directory is being enhanced and will be
relaunched soon with new features.

British Telecom claims to have a patent on hyperlinks. The UK
telecommunications giant says it came up with idea for hyperlinks
in the 1970s, and filed for a patent in the US in 1976, which was
granted in 1989. Although patents on the hyperlink idea in other
countries have now expired, the US patent only runs out in 2006.
According to BT, the patent was forgotten about and only
rediscovered three years ago. With the growth in importance of
the web since the patent was first granted, BT now wish to
capitalize on it.
Apparently, BT spent the last three years preparing its licensing
programme for companies that want to use hyperlinks. It has now
employed intellectual property experts Scipher (formerly the
Thorn-EMI research lab), to invite ISPs to take out licenses on
the patent.
BT has already contacted many of the major US ISPs, and is now
discussing licensing agreements with them. BT says it is not
planning to ask individual users to pay to use the web.
