Hello,
Over the last day or two, Biz Bits passed 1000 subscribers.
Actually, this should have happened (was within easy reach) 3 - 4
weeks ago, but I really slacked off on promoting recently.
Being busy on something else, I ceased daily pro-active routines
like posting to announcement lists, placing classifieds and
looking for new ad swap partners (rather than relying solely on
those who contact me).
Of course I was still getting subscribers, but substantially
fewer. My experience highlights just how important it is to keep
promoting on a regular basis. Never stop. Be a 'promotion
machine' for your title.
In addition, although I had ad swaps still running, most weren't
profitable. I track all my ad swaps - it amazes me how few people
do - it's so easy and provides vital information. However, as a
result of being busy, I accepted several invitations for multiple
swaps on initial contact. A mistake.
Normally, I will run a single issue swap before agreeing to
multiple insertions of 3 or 4 issues. This way, I can monitor the
response from various ezines before committing myself for an
extended period. If an ezine doesn't work for me, I won't
advertise there again.
Distributing my articles to other ezines is something else I've
let slip recently. Another mistake. Having other ezines reprint
your work is a great way to attract new subscribers. I always see
a surge after releasing a new article. If you can write well
enough to produce your own ezine or newsletter, this is one
avenue of promotion you shouldn't miss.
The piece you distribute may not even have started life as an
article as such: I often convert odd bits of copy into an article
format. For example, interesting bits of editorial, or my replies
in response to voters comments in the Voting Booth, can often be
reworked into an article for publication elsewhere.

Track Your Ads - part 1.
I mentioned earlier how important this is for ezine ad swaps, but
it's just as - and sometimes more - important for any other kind
of advertising you may do.
Here are a few examples of the things you should consider
tracking the results from:
* Ezine ads, paid or swaps.
* Link trades or exchanges.
* Free or paid site or ezine listings on third party web sites.
* Articles distributed for publication in other ezines.
* Online classifieds
* FFA postings.
* Free ad or announcement list postings.
* Signature files in emails, discussion lists, newsgroup and
bulletin board posts.
Tracking your ads tells you two vital bits of information:
1. How effective your ad is.
2. How effective the resource displaying your ad is.
Of course, you can't ascertain the second, without knowing the
first. Testing in many locations will provide you with a
benchmark as to the effectiveness of your ad.
If your ad pulls poorly just about everywhere, it's a dud. If it
generates a good response in most places, but in one or two
others, results are awful, the problem lies in the location - or
its suitability - not in your ad.
Knowing exactly what is (and what isn't) working for you is
extremely valuable information. It enables you to concentrate
your energies on those promotional activities that bring you
results.
For example, many people place ads in online classifieds. You
might spend over an hour a day placing ads in 10 - 20 supposedly
good locations. However, if you tracked your results, you might
find that only 2 or 3 of those locations generate enough
responses to make it worth the time it takes to post the ad.
That would give you an extra hour each day to devote to other
areas of promotion.
As you continue to track the response to every kind of
advertising you do, you will eventually filter out all those that
don't work, increasing sales as you do so. Here's an example:
Suppose you spend either 20 hours, or $20 each week on
promotion/advertising. For that amount of time or money, you
routinely get about 10 sales.
Now imagine discovering through tracking that 80% of your
advertising is ineffective. That means you need only spend 4
hours, or $4 each week to get the same 10 sales. The rest is
simply wasted. Thrown away.
Armed with this knowledge, you target the effective 20% and
replace the non-productive activities with new ones. These you
also test by tracking responses, dropping and replacing any that
don't work.
Eventually, all of your 20 hours or $20 each week will be
invested in sure, productive advertising. That same 20 hours or
$20 will now be bringing in 50 sales each week, a 500% increase!
Of course, this is a gross over-simplification, but I'm sure you
get the point. Don't underestimate the power of tracking results.
Be sure to check-in next week for part 2 of this tip, where I'll
explain the various ways you can use to track your campaign
responses.
