+ Introduction +
=====================

Hi!

As it draws to a close, we can look back on 1999 as the year the
'big boys' really got 'serious' about the Internet. Millions have
been invested, 'net stocks soared, and dot com's are being
advertised everywhere, with budgets that would probably have been
laughed at just 12 months ago.

The effects of so many IPOs, takeovers and mergers have radically
changed the Internet landscape forever. With many of the big
players now buying their way into niche markets, where does that
leave the rest of us? To be honest, I doubt anyone can say with
any certainty exactly how things will develop in the year ahead.
There will still be room for us, that's for sure, albeit a little
more cramped. However, if one of these heavyweights snaps up your
competitor, you're probably in trouble. The way forward is in
strategic alliances and/or a tighter focus on your niche.

It's also quite disturbing to think that Yahoo is responsible for
over 50% of web searches (lets look at that another way: 50% of
all searchers for your keywords are only going to view one or two
pages of links, *and* those pages are in Yahoo, hardly the
easiest of places to get listed, never mind highly ranked!).

When you add to this the importance the other engines are placing
on quality, relevant link popularity to gain a good rank, getting
found using these traditional engines is becoming more difficult
than ever. Lets be realistic, what heavily trafficked site is
going to exchange links with you unless you already have plenty
of traffic of your own? And how are you going to get that traffic
if you're not coming up within the first two pages of results, in
either Yahoo or the major SEs?

The answer is of course to look at other ways of promoting your
business. In a way, we are perhaps fortunate that the combined
databases of all the major engines still leave such a vast number
of sites unindexed. I suspect this, together with the overall
growth of the 'net, will lead to an increase in the number of
niche portals and search engines. It means more work, but as
these new engines grow, it will become important to get a good
listing with those relevant to your line of business. For the
small timer, the more popular search portals there are, the
better their chances of being found. With a broader range of
sites ranked, the searcher wins too.

Goto.com's paid listings have provided a good alternative to the
major SEs. However, bids on most popular search terms are already
quite expensive, and prices will of course continue to increase.
This means you have to get more 'creative' with your keywords,
with the inevitable result of traffic that's less highly
targeted. At the other end of the scale, the newer imitators have
yet to prove popular with searchers.

For a while, buying a few Realnames and including a couple of
your keywords in each looked like a good way to get found in some
of the major SEs, especially Alta Vista. Unfortunately, their
recent about turn in allowing the registration of generic terms
(but only to those able to pay mega bucks!) makes them likely to
become useless as a marketing tool for the small business.

For example, recently 'jobs' was bought by jobs.com and MP3 by
mp3.com. This means if you type a search phrase containing the
word 'jobs' you'll get a Realname link returned for jobs.com;
'mp3' with anything will return a link to mp3.com. Tough luck if
you previously bought a Realname like "ABC jobs at home". The
link returned if someone searches for "jobs at home" will now be
to jobs.com! Only typing "ABC jobs at home" exactly will bring
you to ABC-homejobs.com (this all leaves a bad taste in the
mouth).

Offline promotion is an area that I see the small/home online
business paying much more attention to. As online promotion
becomes tougher, people are going to begin devising really
creative and inexpensive ways to get their message out in their
local region.

However, the best marketing vehicle for most of us to concentrate
our efforts on, is without doubt the humble ezine. Apart from the
potential for marketing products in the publication itself, it
also provides an excellent vehicle for driving traffic to your
web site. After every issue of Biz Bits goes out, my traffic logs
show a sharp jump in visitors to the NowSell.com site. Though the
number of visitors drops off again over the next few days, the
average number of visits per week steadily grows.

To be continued....

(Sorry but this was just getting to long! Since in the remainder
I ramble off onto the subject of ezines, I decided to give you
that bit next week!)

                               BB

You probably know that I'm an affiliate of Ken Evoy's 5 Pillar
program. I have always considered Ken's program to be the best on
the Internet.

Why?

First has to be the integrity of the man himself. After buying
Ken's ebook, "Make Your Site Sell!" I was blown away by the shear
volume of quality information Ken had packed into a book selling
for a fraction of the price of other (often 'slimmer') marketing
books (BTW - due to popular demand a print version is now
available: http://www.nowsell.com/info )

The second is his view of the affiliate as a true partner,
providing them with fantastic support, ongoing tips and ideas. He
has the most secure tracking system online to ensure your
customers are yours for life, even if they move house and change
computers! Hand-in-hand with this is Ken's strategy of releasing
a new product every 3 - 4 months, one that is likely to appeal to
your existing customers, and over-delivering in the same way as
the first.

The third (though to many this may be the first) is the superb
free Affiliate Manual that he gives to you when you join. This
book is a complete guide to marketing affiliate programs, packed
with info and definitely good enough to be sold in its own right.

Then there are the many other 'extras' Ken has created to help
his affiliates get more sales. Examples include a special site
with a web page building tool where you can create and host your
own 'doorway' pages. Another is the creation of a sweepstakes and
referral program combination to help you drive more visitors to
the site. Yet another is the analysis of the Beverly Hills Hotel
web site he did and used to create a great sales tool for
affiliates. Check this one out here: http://www.nowsell.com/bhh

Now Ken has pulled even further ahead of the competition. He has
bought the rights to *give away* the $49 Ultimate Link Tracker
program FREE to every 5 Pillar Affiliate!

Ultimate Link Tracker enables you to set up tracking to provide
you with detailed reports on an unlimited number of URLs.
Basically, what this means is that by using different links in
your various ads, signature files and on you web pages, you can
quickly and easily ascertain which are pulling and which aren't.
Link Tracker will keep you from wasting your efforts, time, and
money, allowing you to focus your resources into what *REALLY*
works. Of course you can also use the software for any and all of
the other affiliate programs you may be a member of.

You can buy the Ultimate Link Tracker right now for $49 at
http://www.cgitoolbox.com/cgi/uat/index.html

OR

You can get it FREE when you sign up as a member of my 5 Pillar

FREE too!)

With interest in registering domain names since the extended
lengths became available (if you don't know about this, see
'Tidbits' below), I thought I should tell you about about
TotalNIC.

New domain name registrations at TotalNIC are charged at just
US$35.00 for the first 2 years (Network Solutions still charge
$70, though they have a special 10% discount at present). Plus,
if your current domain name is coming up for renewal, you can
transfer it to TotalNIC for the same $35 including the first 2
years of service. Obviously any existing credit you may have at
NSI cannot be passed on to your TotalNIC account.

Not only are they much cheaper than InterNIC, but their site is
clearer and easier to get around too! http://www.totalnic.net/

Voter Feedback:

NO!

Not investigated properly - but sound like a con. Put another
way, too good to be true. Has anyone ever received any money as a
result of signing up? Was it worth the effort?

mailto:dcd+daviddeeson.co.uk

[Azam: I too was skeptical at first. Then I saw how popular they
were becoming, how much money was being poured in, and looked
again.

Yes, people are being paid, and whilst the income from your own
surfing time may max out at around $50 a month, the secret is in
the referrals. It's a limited pyramid that will only collapse if
the advertisers pull out. But even if that should happen, the
members themselves have no investment to loose.

The only real issue is whether advertisers will find the model
successful over the long term. I expect some of the programs will
disappear, but the quality organizations will track response and
modify their programs to create highly targeted 'individualized'
audiences for their advertisers. One they could never attain
through a regular 'targeted' banner campaign.

Though it may sound otherwise, actually there's nothing "too good
to be true" about it. It's purely business. Advertisers are
paying to get their products under the noses of people that have
expressed an interest in a related field. Money they would
normally pay to web sites for banner impressions. When you sign
up, if you indicate that you are interested in sports, you'll get
ads for sports goods shown to you. Over time, the system notes
your preferences. If you click on ads for baseball related goods
more than any other, you'll receive more of those kind of ads.

HOW TO CREATE A HIGH-IMPACT SALES LETTER -- FAST
------------------------------------------------
Copyright 2000 By Bob Leduc

A persuasive convincing sales letter is a valuable marketing
tool. It's also versatile. I regularly use the same text
successfully in all the following formats:

* Printed letter for postal mail
* Email message (personal and on an autoresponder)
* Posted as a Web page
* Printed circular for postal mail

Over the years I developed a model to follow when I need a
new sales letter. It consistently produces a profitable
letter on the first attempt. This model loosely follows the
well-known AIDA formula (Attention, Interest, Desire,
Action). But I organized the parts of my model letter in a
specific sequence proven to work best. You can copy this
same model to create your own successful sales letters.

SECTION 1: GET ATTENTION FAST WITH A LIST OF BENEFITS

A sales letter must capture the reader's attention
immediately or it won't get read. Most people accomplish
this by stating their biggest benefit at the top of their
letter. I've found something that works even better. Start
your letter with a list of 5 or 6 benefits. Place the
biggest benefit first followed by other benefits in
declining order of importance. Here's the format I usually
follow:

  How would you like to...
  *  Biggest benefit
  *  2nd biggest benefit
  *  3rd biggest benefit
  *  and so on . . .

Prospects won't be able to resist reading more when you
shower them with all those benefits.

SECTION 2: BUILD INTEREST BY EXPLAINING HOW YOU CAN PROVIDE
THE BENEFITS

Here's where you describe the features of your product or
service. It's the least important part of your sales letter.
Try to limit this section of your letter to only 1 or 2
short paragraphs. It may be important to mention the triple
layer of new space age insulation built into your picnic
cooler (a feature). But that's not why customers buy it.
They buy it because they want to enjoy ice cold beverages
all day long when they're outside on a hot summer day (the
benefit).

SECTION 3: DEVELOP A DESIRE TO BUY WITH LOGICAL PERSUASION

Most people buy things on impulse then look for logical
reasons to justify their emotional decision. This section of
your letter is where you inject 4 powerful tools to convert
the reader's emotional interest in your product or service
into logical reasons to buy. They are:

1. A compelling reason to buy from you instead of your
competition. This is called your "USP" or "Unique Selling
Proposition". It's a unique advantage customers get only
   if they buy from you.

2. Testimonials from satisfied users. (You do have some,
   don't you?)

3. Your guarantee. A strong guarantee can easily double the
number of orders produced by your sales letter.

4. A powerful offer -- the best offer you can afford.

SECTION 4: STIMULATE THE READER TO BUY NOW

I often see sales letters and Web pages end abruptly with a
weak statement like, "Order Now", followed by a printed
order form or a link to an online shopping cart. You'll get
more sales by gently maneuvering your customer toward the
ordering process with the following 3 steps.

1. Command your prospect (in a nice way) to order or buy.
   For example:

Don't delay. Take advantage of this Special Price Offer.
Call NOW to place your order or complete the coupon below
and send your order by email, Fax or postal mail TODAY!

2. Explain how to order. This can be part of your command
statement like in the example above. Make it easy for
customers by providing as many different ways to order as
you can (Online, postal mail, FAX, telephone, etc.).

3. Provide an order form but make using it optional. This
   applies online and offline.

Follow this model when you create your next sales letter.
You'll produce a highly effective sales letter -- FAST.

OFFLINE SPENDING BY INTERNET BRANDS PASSES $1 BILLION

TV commercials, radio spots, and billboards are screaming Dot Com
this and Dot Com that, and they aren't doing it for free.
Advertising by dot com companies in traditional media saw
explosive growth over the first three quarters of 1999, with
spending at $1.4 billion, up 291.3 percent from the same period
last year, according to Competitive Media Reporting (CMR).

Internet Domain Registrars http://www.registrars.com, an
ICANN-accredited domain registrar, is the first registrar to
offer 67 character domain names. Until recently, domain
names had been limited to 26 characters in length. The extended
domain length introduces millions of new possible combinations.
As a result, many new marketable domains are likely to emerge.

STATMARKET.COM REPORT SHOWS YAHOO CONTINUES TO SMASH COMPETITION

WebSideStory¨ (www.websidestory.com), a pioneer of Internet-based
Web audience analysis, today reported that Yahoo (NASDAQ: YHOO)
has surged in popularity this fall and now accounts for close to
56% of all search engine referrals.

Between Jan. 12 and Dec. 19 of this year, Yahoo's market share
zoomed nearly 18 percentage points, giving the search portal a
five-to-one lead over its nearest competitor, according to
StatMarket.com, a division of WebSideStory. Nearly 14 percent of
Yahoo's growth has occurred since the beginning of September.

What Yahoo has gained in market share, other search engines have
lost. Excite saw its referral percentage plummet nearly 17 points
from a high of 26.51% on Jan. 13 to 9.66% on Dec. 19. Excite
currently ranks third on StatMarket's top ten list.

Despite dropping 6.5 percentage points since Feb. 4, Alta Vista
came in second place with 11.18% of all search engine referrals
on Dec. 19.

In addition to Yahoo, the other big gainer was the Go Network,
which placed fourth with a market share of 8%. The Web property
has gained more than 7.5 points since April 22 when it claimed
only .34% of referrals.

Lycos, which ranked fifth with 5%, also showed considerable
gains, moving up nearly four points since early January.

InfoSeek rounded out the top ten with .91% of referrals, a drop
of more than seven points since Sept. 7.

The top ten referring search engines on December 19, 1999 were:

Rank	Search Site Current %

1. YAHOO 55.81

TIPS FOR THE HOLIDAYS
by Azam Corry

Make sure you take a break over the holidays. Spend some time
with your family and friends doing the things you like to do
best. One day you'll regret it if you don't. Life is short. The
Internet will still be here when you come back.

Don't worry about the possible effects of Y2K. Confirm that you
have checked your system and all important software. Write it
down if it helps. Back-up *ALL* important data, just in case. You
don't want something you were sure wouldn't be affected to cause
major headaches later on. When you've done all you can, *forget*
about it until 2000. Worrying will only spoil your holidays, and
will have zero effect on the possibility of problems arising.

Amidst all the rush of buying gifts for those who you want to buy
for, those who you 'have' to buy for, and the crappy gifts you
buy 'just in case' unexpected visitors arrive with equally crappy
gifts for you, take time out to choose one person to whom you
could really make a difference this year.

Think of what you could give them that they'd really appreciate,
and truly value. Something extra special. Something personal. It
needn't be expensive, though it could be. Expensive doesn't mean
special. Caring means special.

It might be Christmas eve spent with a lonely neighbor, or a
helpful aid for a disabled child you know, or an orthopaedic
mattress to ease your mother's back pain, or taking a house-bound
relative for a day out....

Whoever and whatever it is, if you really try, I'm sure you can
think of a person to whom you can give a special gift this year.

Just one person. It's not much.

And when you do, the wonderful feeling you'll receive in return
will be a gift to YOU that money can't buy! A gift worth more
than whatever you gave.

Happy holidays!

Azam
