+ Introduction +
I was holding my breath after the last issue in case I was
falsely accused of spamming for a second time (if you don't know
what I'm talking about, read the last issue). As you can see, I'm
still here, so everything *appears* to be OK! I must confess, I'm
still a bit jittery though!
On the subject of spam, I came across a new service last week
called "Brightmail" http://www.brightmail.com/ that promises to
radically reduce the amount of junk email that you receive - free
Basically the service intercepts mail on it's way to you and then
filters it for 'known spam', which it sends to your online
account at Brightmail, whilst the remainder continues on to your
regular email account with your ISP.
You can log into your online account at any time to check for
filtered messages you may wish to keep. Brightmail also say that
in the event of any technical problems with their servers, the
system is configured to automatically route all your mail
directly to your ISP, to be sure you never loose a single email.
The following details are taken from the Brightmail site:
Brightmail will work with your email account if it is a POP3
account and the email server is not located behind a firewall.
You qualify if you retrieve your email using any POP3 email
software. For example:
Eudora Lite and Pro
Netscape Messenger, all versions
Other POP3 email software
Your email server is not behind a firewall.
You DON'T qualify if you use:
Lotus cc:mail or Notes
Web-based email (Yahoo!, Hotmail, etc)
Your email server is behind a firewall.
Brightmail is different from current anti-spam offerings because
it is a service rather than just a rule-writing product.
Rule-writing products let users filter specific incoming email
messages, but the email user must already know something about
the incoming message in order to filter it.
Brightmail relies on anti-spam specialists at the Brightmail
Logistics and Operations Center (BLOC) who continually monitor
hundreds of special email accounts looking for spam. When they
detect a spam message, these specialists create a filter to block
it. That new rule then becomes part of the Spam Wall, a filter
through which a Brightmail user's messages are sent.
According to Sunil Paul, president and founder of Brightmail,
Inc. "Major ISPs such as AT&T WorldNet have already announced
their plans to deploy the service and we have great partners like
Concentric, EarthLink, Excite+Home, and Juno."
Apparently they are already working on extending the service to
include users of AOL and WebTV, etc. http://www.brightmail.com/
There seems to be a lot of interest in the new crop of "paid to
surf" and "paid to read email" programs. Whilst you'll never make
a fortune with these programs, you can soon be earning over $200
a month if you join several. Not bad for doing virtually nothing!
The extra cash could be used for covering your online expenses,
etc., especially if you're not earning from your business yet.
Money Magazine states, "Commerce on the web is expected to
explode from its current $2.6 billion in annual sales to more
than $220 billion in 2001."
COMPETITION WINNER! Though the competition was cancelled early,
being good for my word, I've awarded the prize to the leader up
to the date of cancellation. Don Morris is the lucky winner and
his prize of having his ad displayed in the top 'sponsors' spot

I am *still* receiving posts for Biz Bits that should be sent
to the FFA list. So I'll repeat again for the benefit of new
subscribers (and old ones that aren't paying attention!):

This is the place where we take a quick poll for a snapshot of
the Biz Bits family's position on a given topic.

Keep those votes coming!
Even though I have a "personal" account through which I receive a
lot of e-mail (including Biz Bits), I also have my own domain
through which I receive my business e-mail. Your story brings up
a very important reason to have your own domain when you operate
an online business: you can move www.yourdomain.com to any other
hosting provider, but www.someisp.net/mybiz or
www.freeservice.com/mybiz are going nowhere.
Rick Beneteau's article in last week's Biz Bits gave some
additional tips to avoid being shut down in the event that you
are accused of spamming -- your readers should go back and read
that. Finally, Azam, your comment "There is no way I can get off
these lists! There is no ISP to report them to!" is met with my
suggestion to check out http://spamcop.net. Their reporting
tools may help you contribute in shutting down these vermin.

[Azam: Very good point by Don.
Imagine if my site wasn't http://www.NowSell.com , but was
http://www.abcHost.com/NowSell or http://NowSell.abcHost.com and
that I hadn't been able to get my account reinstated. Sure, I
could still get a new host, but whereas with my own domain the
URL would remain the same, without one I would get a new URL,
Immediately every link to my site from anywhere in the universe
is lost! All my articles posted anywhere online would have to be
updated, articles archived in other publications would be useless
to me, as would be all search engine and directory listings. And
that could be just the tip of the iceberg. What about link swaps,
banner exchanges, classified ads, cgi scripts, etc., etc.? I'm
sure you can think of many others.
Fortunately, if you really, *really* can't afford your own domain
name, there is a work-around that will minimize the damage. Sign
up with an URL forwarding service and use this new 'pointer' URL
*everywhere* instead of your real URL.
Some of these services don't get on well with search engines that
object to redirects. http://homepad.com is good in this respect
as you add your page title, description and keywords to be part
of the redirect (you can even use these as mini doorway pages,
though you won't rank well on those SE's like InfoSeek that place
a lot of importance on link popularity).
Of course if they delete your account as well... your sunk!
I will as Don suggests check out http://spamcop.net , though
there's a few that haven't spammed me for the last few days -
perhaps someone else has already nailed 'em!]
No, I'm not prepared at all! But after reading your warning -- I
am going to get busy!

7 Tips For Creating More Effective,
Copyright © 1999 by Robert Boduch
Few things are more important to the success of your
marketing efforts than the headlines you lead off with in
your sales letters, display ads, and web pages. An
attention-getting, arresting headline has the power to pull
in many more prospects and customers.
A headline is nothing more than a collection of words
designed to get qualified prospects to sit up and take
notice. As such, its task is a huge and vital one. To create
a winning headline, distill your most unique benefits down
to one powerful sentence that packs a punch. Following are
13 easy-to-follow tips to help you create more successful
1) Do your homework. Start by gathering important
information. Decide on the venue for your headline, then,
identify the 6 key elements of successful marketing
materials. These include:
1. The product or service.
2. The benefits
3. The market.
4. What the market really desires and the most common
problem it encounters.
5. Any special offer or inducement you can think of that
would increase interest.
6. The competition and any claims they may be
2) Isolate your most impressive and unique competitive
advantage. Look at your product or service the way your
customers and prospects do. Put yourself in their shoes.
What would get these people to pay attention? What is the
strongest benefit you can offer?
If your product was the "dream solution", the answer to your
customers deepest desires, what would it do for them? Now
your job is to create a headline that clearly contrasts from
other competing headlines, all vying to attract the same
3) Get started and write as many headlines as you can. Your
first headline probably won't be your best work. But as you
continue writing, you'll find better ways to express your
thoughts in a more compelling, provocative or arresting way.
Try several different formats from questions to combination-
style headlines. Don't worry about perfect spelling or
presentation --simply let your ideas flow and jot them down.
This strategy is shared by some of the best copywriters in
the world. After you've created a lengthy list of
possibilities, choose your top 3 to 5 headlines and tweak
them for maximum impact. Testing will reveal your most
4) Brainstorm words and phrases that colorfully express
your productís unique benefits. In a short space of time,
you can generate a plethora of vibrant, expressive words and
original phrases that can help make your headline stand out
from all others.
With brainstorming, best results are obtained with a pre-set
time frame of 5 minutes or so. Simply allow your creative
juices to flow and record every word, without judgment.
Ignore the temptation to evaluate the merit of any
particular suggestion. After a few short minutes,
you'll have plenty of power-packed, benefit-oriented
headline words to choose from.
5) Deliver a clear, concise, and complete message. Edit
your headline for clarity. Make sure your words are easily
understood and do not evoke mixed messages. Be direct rather
than subtle... benefit-oriented rather than amusing or
Readers generally digest a headline as one item,
simultaneously taking in all the words as a complete unit
and processing it as a single image. You want to be sure
that the image your headline delivers is crystal-clear and
not open to misinterpretation.
6) Capture attention, pique the interest of your prospects
and arouse their curiosity. Do these three things and you're
sure to have a winning headline.
First and foremost, you've got to attract the attention of
readers. Think of your headline as a visual siren. Call out
to your best prospects with something thatís vitally
important to these folks only.
Secondly, communicate in terms of benefits or helpful
advantages and make your benefits more enticing and
appealing than what the competition offers. Benefits address
the self-interest of prospects. Benefits are all about
prospects and what they'll get as a result of buying
Thirdly, add a little mystique to the picture and you'll
arouse your prospectís curiosity. Reveal just enough in your
headline to literally drive your prospects to find out more.
7) Think of your headline as the message on a billboard.
With most headlines you probably only have a few fleeting
seconds to get your main selling point across.
Rewrite and refine your message to down to its most
powerful, concise statement. Make it deliver your most
payable punch, promptly. Give the skimming reader the
opportunity to receive your essential message in one quick
take. Hit hard and hit fast. If you don't, you'll
never win at this increasingly competitive game.

HOW TO DOUBLE YOUR BUSINESS INCOME -- IT'S EASIER THAN
Copyright 1999 By Bob Leduc
The only way you can guarantee the long term growth and
success of your business is to continually increase the
amount of money coming in. There are only 3 ways you can
increase the flow of money coming into your business:
1. Increase your number of customers (Get more new
2. Increase the average dollar amount of each purchase (Get
3. Increase the frequency of purchases by your average
customer (Get more repeat business).
You'll be amazed at the impact a small increase in each
category can have on your total volume of business. Do you
think you can increase each of these 3 categories by just 5%
or 10% -- or maybe more? An increase of only 10% in each
category will increase your total income by 33%. A 25%
increase will almost double it. Look at the following
illustration to see how this works:
Number of Average Purchases per
Customers x Purchase x Per Customer = Total Income
500 x $30.00 x 2 = $30,000
If you increase each category by only 10% you'll increase
your total income by 33%...
550 x $33.00 x 2.2 = $39,930
Suppose you can increase each category by 25%...
625 x $37.50 x 2.5 = $58,594
A 25% increase in each category almost doubles your income
Apply these numbers to your business and do some
experimenting. Most businesses find it impractical to
increase all 3 categories by exactly the same percentage.
It's easier and less expensive to increase the average size
of each purchase and the number of purchases than to get
more new customers. For example, you can double your total
income with the 3 following increases:
20% more new customers
20% bigger sales
40% more repeat business
There are many ways you can increase your growth in these 3
categories. The following lists include only 3 for each
category to stimulate your thinking. All 9 are simple and
inexpensive methods any business can put into action.
TO GET MORE CUSTOMERS...
* Implement an automatic follow up procedure to periodically
contact previous prospects who didn't buy. (This one
procedure alone can increase your number of new customers
by 50% or more.)
* Set up a proactive referral program to automatically ask
every prospect and customer for referrals.
* Establish a procedure to get free publicity on a regular
TO GET BIGGER SALES...
* Increase your prices.
* Find or develop some higher priced products or services to
* Propose an "Upselling Offer" in every transaction. Offer
an upgraded product for a higher price. Or, combine the
original product with one or more related products to
create a special package for a higher price.
TO GET MORE REPEAT BUSINESS...
* Develop a special offer for existing customers.
* Find or create additional products or services to offer
* Communicate regularly with customers. Keep reminding them
of the benefits you offer.
There are only 3 ways to increase the flow of money into
your business. A small increase in each category will
substantially increase your total income. Use the
information in this article to develop your personal
marketing plan to double your business income. Be sure to
include a realistic deadline. You'll discover it's easier to
double your business income than you thought.

"We cannot always oblige, but we can always speak obligingly."
"Manners are more important than laws. Upon them in a great
measure laws depend. The law can touch us here and there, now and
then. Manners are what vex or soothe, corrupt or purify, exalt or
debase, barbarize or refine, by a constant, steady uniform
insensible operation like that of the air we breathe. They give
their whole form and color to our lives."
