When Google did some 40 tweaks in its system last February, one of the updates that caught the attention of the SEO community concerns the search engine’s link evaluation method. According to Google, it turned off one of its long-time link analysis methods in order to keep its system more functional, clean and easy to understand.

The sad part is that the search engine giant did not specifically pointed out which of its past link evaluation methods had retired, making numerous webmasters feel uneasy. Speculations about the change have been going around – some said that the update may have occurred in local interconnectivity; others suggest that it might be the indexing of anchor text or, perhaps, the cross-language retrieval.

Most webmasters know that the backlinks which point to their website are used by Google to help determine how trustworthy it thinks the site is and how high it should rank in search results.

But it’s not just the number of links, or where they come from that counts. Almost as important is the anatomy of the link itself and the type of anchor text it uses. If you don’t know what anchor text is, here’s a good primer.

While its tempting for webmasters who know a little bit about anchor text & SEO to just go after the anchor text links which most closely match the keywords they’re trying to rank for, this might not always be the best strategy.

Article marketing of some form or other is an important aspect of any SEO campaign. It involves syndicating your content to third party sites in order to bring you traffic and deliver high PR links from well known and aged domains.

Although article marketing has been around a long time, recent developments at the search engines mean there are a few more things you need to do to ensure continued success.

Anchor Text Variety

These days most marketers have heard of anchor text, the clickable words that are hilighted in a link. Search engines use these words to help determine relevancy of the page the link points to. For example if a lot of people link to your site with a keyword “food for cats” as a clickable link, then search engines will assume your site is probably about cat food.
