The advent of HTML5 is exciting for Web developers. HTML5 deprecates code that doesn’t follow standards and introduces new tags, many that make it easier to perform specific tasks. Some even make it easier to implement search engine optimization, or SEO, on your website.

As more websites are created using the new HTML standard (Hypertext Markup Language), which hasn’t been updated since the late 1990s, the Internet is being refreshed. If you haven’t considered using it on your own website, then you could be missing out on the benefits HTML5 brings to multimedia such as videos.

The <video> tag wasn’t available with HTML 4. To show a video, you would have used the Flash embed tag with attributes that defined the video size, whether it automatically played or if your visitor was able to control the video. This type of embedding was used for video and audio content alike. However, the new HTML5 video tag lets search engines know exactly what kind of content you’re displaying — a video — and you add the attributes directly to this tag so search engines can more easily extract information about your videos when indexing your website.
